Architettura educatrice. Progetto per la scuola di architettura di Parma

The thesis work develops a project proposal for the School of Architecture in Parma. The school, which is currently merged with the faculty of engineering, located at the Campus of Science at the southern edge of the city, finds a new location in the former registry office, a privileged point of the city, right in the historic center, overlooking the river, it is right in front of Piazza Ghiaia and Palazzo della Pilotta. The space, left empty after the bombardment of the convent complex of Santa Teresa during the Second World War, saw a succession of uses to become the seat of the Registry; demolished this last building, the city offered a large space in a strategic area, both for its relations with the Campus of Human Sciences, and for its position in the historic center of Parma. The dense and complex urban fabric to which the project is connected has been the basis of design choices in a dual manner, entering into harmony and at the same time in conflict. The large scale of the university building is in contrast to the uneven sequence of Gothic lots that characterize the whole area of ​​the Oltretorrente. The open space is an integral part of the building, classic elements such as the courtyard and the arcade punctuate the heart of the project. With particular attention to the theme of light and the quality of the spaces, the building is shaped according to the needs of those who live and use it. For a student the scholastic / university building assumes an important element of his life and his training, the aim of this design process is therefore the research and creation of a space suitable for architectural students (which has characteristics and needs different from those of any other university student), in which he can feel good, but also draw inspiration and can above all develop a feeling of identity.

Il lavoro di tesi sviluppa una proposta progettuale per la Scuola di Architettura di Parma. La scuola, che attualmente è accorpata alla facoltà di ingegneria, situata al Campus delle Scienze al limite meridionale della città, trova una nuova collocazione nell’area dell’ex anagrafe, un punto privilegiato della città, in pieno centro storico, con affaccio sul fiume e vista su piazza Ghiaia e il palazzo della Pilotta. Lo spazio, lasciato vuoto dopo il bombardamento del complesso conventuale di Santa Teresa durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ha visto un susseguirsi di destinazioni d’uso fino a diventare la sede dell’Anagrafe; demolito anche quest’ultimo edificio, la città offriva uno spazio ampio in una zona strategica, sia per le sue relazioni con il Campus delle Scienze Umane, che per la posizione nel centro storico di Parma. Il fitto e complesso tessuto urbano a cui il progetto va a connettersi è stato alla base delle scelte progettuali in una duplice maniera, entrandone in armonia e allo stesso tempo in confitto. La grande scala dell’edificio universitario si contrappone infatti alla disomogenea sequenza di lotti gotici che caratterizzano tutta l’area dell’Oltretorrente. Lo spazio aperto è parte integrante dell’edificio, elementi classici quali la corte e il porticato scandiscono il cuore del progetto. Con un’attenzione particolare al tema della luce e alla qualità degli spazi, l’edificio si plasma in base alle esigenze di chi lo vive e lo utilizza. Per uno studente l’edifico scolastico/universitario assume un elemento importante della sua vita e della sua formazione, il fine di questo processo progettuale è dunque la ricerca e la creazione di uno spazio a misura di studente d’architettura (il quale ha caratteristiche e necessità differenti da quelle di chiunque altro studente universitario), nel quale egli possa starci bene, ma anche trarne ispirazione e possa soprattutto sviluppare un sentimento di identità. E concludo citando le parole di Ernesto Natan Rogers che su Domus scriveva nel giugno 1947: “[…] ma è bene mettere in conto che i problemi dell’istruzione non possono compiersi senza un’architettura educatrice.”
