Il Novocomum di Giuseppe Terragni alla prova del tempo. Costruzione, trasformazioni, tutela, restauro

This research stems from the need to contribute to the construction of a "material history" of twentieth century architecture, a story that, moving from the interpretations of the projects and the poetics of the authors investigated by historians and critics, reveals the ways of building construction, the techniques and materials used in the construction phase, and continues until the events of the changes and transformations that have interested them until today. Object of study the Novocomum, the first large building for housing designed by Giuseppe Terragni. A first step was to return the construction of the work through a graphic representation, reflecting on the times and methods of designing and creating structures and finishes. A story made of debates, of harsh criticism but also of many praises. Compared to the original building, there are many transformations that have given today a transfigured 20th century work. It seemed useful, in many respects necessary, to retrace the story of the building as it was done so far, reconstruct the events and highlight the open issues, with their complexity and limitations, due primarily to the lack of material received, in relation to the belated ties of 1987. The theme of transformation emerged, clearly and urgently, which inevitably led to a reflection on the meaning of authenticity. For years, in dealing with the theme of the intervention on the Novocomum, we have provided hasty and discontinuous answers, able to solve the immediate partial problem, without considering the issue in its entirety, with continuous changes and substitutions that concerned the different aspects of the building, first of all the façades and more particularly the windows and doors. The meaning of the research is in having reconstructed the characters and the complexity of events that led to the origin of a precious architecture, measuring the changes that occurred from the comparison of the building with the history, which are manifested in the first place in its materiality, to preserve what remains of the origins and redefine the identity of an icon of the twentieth century.

Questa ricerca nasce dall’esigenza di contribuire alla costruzione di una “storia materiale” dell’architettura del XX secolo, una storia che, muovendo dalle interpretazioni dei progetti e della poetica degli autori indagata da storici e critici, riveli i modi di costruzione degli edifici, le tecniche e i materiali impiegati in fase di cantiere, e prosegua fino a seguirne la vicenda delle modifiche e trasformazioni che li hanno interessati fino ad oggi. Oggetto di studio il Novocomum, primo grande edificio per abitazioni progettato da Giuseppe Terragni. Un primo passo è stato restituire attraverso la rappresentazione grafica la costruzione dell’opera, riflettendo sui tempi e le modalità di progettazione e realizzazione delle strutture e delle finiture. Una storia fatta di dibattiti, di aspre critiche ma anche di numerosi elogi. Rispetto all’edificio delle origini, numerose sono le trasformazioni che hanno consegnato ai nostri giorni un’opera del XX secolo trasfigurata. È sembrato utile, per molti aspetti necessario, ripercorrere il racconto dell’edificio come era stato fatto fin ora, ricostruirne le vicende e evidenziare le questioni aperte, con le loro complessità e limiti, dovuti in primo luogo alla lacunosità dei materiali pervenuti, in relazione al tardivo vincolo del 1987. È emerso, chiaro e urgente, il tema della trasformazione, che ha indotto inevitabilmente a riflettere sul significato di autenticità. Per anni, nell’affrontare il tema dell’intervento sul Novocomum, si sono fornite delle risposte affrettate e discontinue, atte a risolvere l’immediato problema parziale, senza considerare la questione nella sua interezza, con continue modifiche e sostituzioni che hanno riguardato i diversi aspetti dell’edificio, prime tra tutte le facciate e più in particolare i serramenti. Il significato della ricerca è nell’aver ricostruito i caratteri e la complessità di vicende che hanno portato all’origine di un’architettura preziosa, misurando i mutamenti avvenuti dal confronto dell’edificio con la storia, che si manifestano in primo luogo nella sua materialità, per conservare ciò che resta delle origini e ridefinire l’identità di un’icona del XX secolo.
