The purpose of the following document is to present the work done, during a tree month internship, at Total headquarter in La Defense (Paris), inside Coordination Exploration Affaires Nouvelles (CEAN). The main goal of this entity was to orient studies from exploration teams and new business to a petroleum architect (APP) in the proper product line. Product lines are divisions from Exploration and Production sector that are specialised in a certain type of petroleum project, for example On-shore for fields on land, or Deep Water for offshore oil and gas development, with water depths greater than 500m. CEAN plays also the role of technical referent and methodology warrant for the studies in the earliest stages of petroleum projects, before the exploration well, called “prospect studies”. Hence the main task performed during the internship was to create new tools in order to help the APPs to perform their prospect development studies. Two tools were developed: The first one was dedicated to oil and gas prospect combinations. This is a really important task in order to qualify, for an aggregation of prospects, the expected volumes and an overall probability of success. The second was a full cost schedule, associated to an entire project, to plan every cost from exploration phase to abandonment phase. These tools are nowadays used in approval decision meetings and continue to be updated with new features inside the group. Benchmarking studies have also been performed, supervised by the Deepwater architecture and development team, to check the validity of the internal Total Benchmarks, and the commonly used technical rules of thumb for facility designs. As most of these data are confidential, only a small part of the studies performed will be presented here.
