Urban rural continuum vs townization. Architecture for urban-rural continuum. A market for Meishan (Longhai, Zhang Zhou, Fujian)

My thesis is an urban and architectural design project based on Longhai, Zhang Zhou, Fujian, China. This area, (Longhai), is a rural area with many old villages containing a lot of local traditional Chinese architecture. This area is next to the sea and it’s near to Xiamen, a fully developed and a touristic area, with an international airport. Longhai will be developed in the future like the other areas in the way that the Chinese urban designers do it. This way doesn’t respect the heritage of the areas, so we are proposing a new approach. Longhai area’s villages used to be connected with canals and these canals were the main route of transportation. The idea is to reuse this water connection between the villages and enhance the use of the canals. Also create a new hub that connects the fully developed areas that are next to our area. The way to do it is to develop a campus in a village that is in the middle of the area and it’s connected with a new major highway. The development of our project will bring life to the village and it can use the traditional houses in different ways. In addition, we are proposing new residential buildings for the inhabitants, and a market place that is located by the main canal that connects the village with the other villages. The area that connects the water with the village was very important to the inhabitants. For these reasons the leader of the clan Zheng family built his house there and also the temple of the local God is nearby to the north of the site. All the villages have the temples near the water because it was an important space for them and the canals were the best transit way. Behind Zheng’s house we have the river, so I made a port for the boats and a marketplace. The feeling that I want for this area to have is the same feeling you get in the traditional Chinese market places with the compression and decompression spaces. This site has a complex shape and it’s basically the gate from the water to the village. The need to connect these places and to use the space of the site inspired me to use the hexagon.

La mia tesi è un progetto urbanistico e architettonico basato su Longhai, Zhang Zhou, Fujian, Cina. Questa zona, (Longhai), è una zona rurale con molti vecchi villaggi contenenti un sacco di architettura tradizionale cinese locale. Questa zona è vicina al mare ed è vicino a Xiamen, una completamente sviluppata e a zona turistica, con un internazionale Aeroporto. Longhai saranno sviluppati in avvenire come le altre zone nel senso che i progettisti urbani cinesi lo fanno. In questo modo non si rispetta il patrimonio delle aree, quindi stiamo proponendo un nuovo approccio. Longhai villaggi della zona utilizzati per essere collegato con canali e questi canali sono stati il percorso principale di trasporto. L'idea è di Reutilizzare thè collegamento idrico tra i villaggi e valorizzare l'uso dei canali. Anche creare un nuovo Hub che connette le aree completamente sviluppate che sono accanto alla nostra zona. Il modo per farlo è quello di sviluppare un campus in un villaggio che si trova nel bel mezzo della zona ed è collegato con una nuova strada principale. Lo sviluppo di il nostro progetto porterà la vita al villaggio e può utilizzare le case tradizionali in modi diversi. In più, stiamo proponendo i nuovi edifici residenziali per gli abitanti e un posto del mercato che è situato dal canale principale che collega il villaggio con gli altri villaggi. La zona che collega l'acqua con il villaggio era molto importante per gli abitanti. Per questi motivi il leader della famiglia Zheng clan costruito la sua casa ci e anche il Tempio del Dio locale è vicino al nord del sito. Tutti i villaggi hanno i templi vicino all'acqua perché era uno spazio importante per loro e i canali erano il modo migliore di transito. Dietro casa di Zheng abbiamo il fiume, così ho fatto un porto per le barche e un mercato. La sensibilità che desidero affinchè questa zona abbia è la stessa sensibilità che ottenete nei posti cinesi tradizionali del mercato con gli spazi di decompressione e di compressione. Questo sito ha una forma complessa ed è fondamentalmente il cancello dall'acqua al villaggio. La necessità di collegare questi luoghi e di utilizzare lo spazio del sito mi ha ispirato ad utilizzare l'esagono.
