Stainless steels can be subject to several embrittlement mechanisms. Some of these operate during the making and processing of steel to its final shape, while the others relate to its fabrication and end-use. The present work discusses about the embrit-tlement phenomena that involved drawn wires made in ferritic stainless steel EN 1.4106. The company Eure Inox srl, which provided the material, wants to investigate the causes that bring to the brittle failure of the material during the drawing process. The ferritic stainless steel wire rod is drawn directly as just as it’s received from the external supplier without any intermediate heat treatment. About 90% of the supply, 14 tons of material, presented several cracks transversally and longitudinally. The aim of this work was to discover the possible causes of these failures focusing on the study of the material characteristics of the supplied wire rod. Heat treatments, tensile tests and microstructure analysis were conducted discovering that the material has a brittle behavior due to the presence of secondary phases and precipitates generated during the wire rod production.

Abstract
Heat treatments, tensile tests and microstructure analysis were conducted discovering that the material has a brittle behavior due to the presence of secondary phases and precipitates generated during the wire rod production.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
