This Master's Degree thesis presents a study of optimization and layout planning in order to evaluate the impact caused by the installation of an automatic vertical storage in the context of a ropeways company. The case under analysis is a typical problem in the industrial realities in which the optimization of the layout and the flows of materials is becoming more and more important. The problem can be traced back to a cell forming case in which it is necessary to determine the location of the cell (in this case the vertical storage) and to form the corresponding part-family. The interest of the company is to derive economic benefit from the warehouse installation and this benefit can be obtained thanks to two main factors: a saving in logistics times or a saving of physical space that can be reassigned to value additive activities. The problem is therefore defined as a minimization of the logistic times of internal transport and preparation of orders: among the various techniques in the literature on this topic, it was decided to use Linear Programming as it allows to manage a large volume of data without excessive computational costs. The analysis was carried out for different possible positions of the warehouse within the layout, established by studying the material flows and the structural constraints present in the plant. Once the optimal solution has been determined, the resulting economic benefits are assessed, which however are unsatisfactory considering the investment cost. The company has therefore decided to install a traditional shelves in the position that was optimal according to the programming, obtaining the same economic benefits with a much lower investment cost.

Abstract
The company has therefore decided to install a traditional shelves in the position that was optimal according to the programming, obtaining the same economic benefits with a much lower investment cost.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
