This thesis focuses on the use of the composite materials, carbon fiber in a thermoplastic matrix or fiberglass in a thermosetting matrix, within architectural and engineer field. The first project, White Louvers, considers the fulfillment of plates made of fiberglass reinforced suitable for the cladding of free-form buildings. The research strength is the time e cost optimisation in terms of productive process. In particular, the elliptical building above the 19th-century wing of “Teatro alla Scala” designed by Mario Botta, has been taken as a case study in which those plates achieve the perfect balance between technology and architecture. White Louvers has been a protagonist at the Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition 4.0 exhibition, an important European event on the innovation and factory 4.0. Black Weaving is the second project that uses carbon fiber in a thermoplastic matrix in order to develop an innovative product through the combination of producing technology at the leading-edge: robotic tape laying + thermo-forming. The design considers a carbon fiber strengthening of the critical points in the system; considering only those points that are most severely stressed, the process allows reducing the fabrication time and pricing without decreasing the resistance of the final product. Black Weaving has played as a protagonist in the international competition SRRIC 2017 in Xi’an, China, taking over the third place out of 44 Universities. The key issue of both of the previous projects is the application of the digital robotic fabrication, a process that permits the realisation of the mockup in different shape and dimensions and the parametric design – mass customization. The fabrication techniques utilized in the productive processes are Automated laying and Hotwire cutting. Finally, it is highlighted that the two original contributions have been handled in all of their steps, from the preliminary design to the object fabrication.
