“For Jane Austen and the readers of Pride and Prejudice, as for Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennett's solitary walks express the independence that literally takes the heroine out of the social sphere of the houses and their inhabitants, into a larger, lonelier world where she is free to think: walking articulates both physical and mental freedom” Rebecca Solnit, author or “ Wanderlust: A history of walking” , was writing in her book in 2000. It’s from this sentence that my research took off: a study that goes through the footwear as means of freedom and movement. Because of this my essay focuses mainly on the barefootwear, a kind of minimalist footwear and, more generally, a style trend and philosophical current. To frame the world of barefootwear, I took the liberty of researching what’s around it, including the design process and the history of the sneaker, which is the undeniable category in which the barefootwear fall in. Going through the sneaker history, let me understand what was the huge phenomena of the athleisure, and how this good came to be so important in the 21st century lifestyle. The research moves from basic knowledge for designers to historical pills and focuses, towards the barefootwear world. Since my project includes technology, I considered of utmost priority to give an overlook at the new technologies, ideas and innovation in footwear design, as the trends nowadays flow in that direction. As a designer, I consider including and operating with all kind of technology is a must to reach appealing and innovative results: the world of fashion and accessories, including footwear, is in constant development and goes through a myriad of changes. My project, included in this thesis, in fact, is an experimental union between barefootwear and 3d printing. The collection of shoes is called Sock.on and explores the potential and limits of 3d printing directly on fabric for the fashion field with a sperimental approach made of trials, tests and innovative materials.
