Carlo Grotesk Font family. I caratteri Grotesk come riferimento progettuale

Why still today, in type design practice, we continue taking as a reference the grotesk style — born in the nineteenth century and which reached its maximum spread in the post-war period in the works of the graphic design master related to the “International or Swiss Style”? What else can we say about a topic in unstopping development? Talking about type, which dynamics are taking place in the reinterpretation of the grotesk style? The aim of this project is the design of new font family starting from researching the old models that have characterised the Modern Era. We will than demonstrate that reinterpreting a style is possible trough the analysis of the main contemporary grotesk fonts and interviewing five of the most influential type designer. Therefore the final outcome of this project will be the design of a font family and its own application in different supports: Carlo Grotesk is a sans serif font family inspired by the aesthetics and geometric strictness of Modern Architecture design composition. It is designed trying to optimize the reading use in small sizes, as well as the display use — easier for sans serif fonts. This publication, a series of posters and an illustrated specimen, will test the usability, the reading and the correctness of the design beside showing few different graphic layouts.

Perché nella pratica del type design si continua oggi a prendere ispirazione da un modello (o stile) di riferimento, il grotesk, nato nell’Ottocento, ma che vede la sua massima diffusione nel dopoguerra nei lavori dei maestri della grafica afferenti all’“International o Swiss Style”? Cosa ancora si può dire riguardo un tema in continua attualizzazione? Quali sono le dinamiche che si attivano dalla reinterpretazione di uno stile se parliamo di type design? L’ipotesi di partenza è quella di disegnare un nuovo carattere tipografico partendo dallo studio dei modelli che hanno caratterizzato il periodo della modernità. Dimostreremo quindi che la reinterpretazione di uno stile è possibile tramite l’analisi dei principali progetti di type designer contemporanei ed intervistandone cinque tra i più influenti presenti sul panorama europeo. L’esito di questo lavoro sarà quindi il progetto di una “font family” e la sua applicazione in diversi artefatti: Carlo Grotesk è una famiglia di caratteri sans serif ispirata dall’estetica e al rigore geometrico della composizione architettonica moderna. è disegnato cercando di ottimizzare al massimo la lettura, oltre che nell’utilizzo display, più facile per i caratteri sans serif, anche per i testi correnti a corpi ridotti. Questa pubblicazione, una serie di poster ed uno specimen illustrato, ne proveranno la fruibilità della lettura, la correttezza del disegno e mostreranno le diverse possibili applicazioni del carattere.
