Libro pop-up interattivo. Tra realtà aumentata e realtà tangibile

The idea behind this dissertation is the desire to conceive a concept that allows a new way of interaction and integration between books and augmented reality systems. The analysis of this increasingly widespread technology has brought to light its peculiarities and its multiple sides, highlighting multiple uses and showing its potential and its limits. One of the main objectives of this concept was the creation of a real and tangible interaction between the real world and the virtual reality, moving away from touchscreen interfaces - always more frequently used with augmented reality - and moving close to traditional use of books, not just as a mere support with a display on top, but as an essential tool for reading and playing. The conceived system is a storybook for children, in which the story is created, then evolves and can be changed in front of children’s eyes. Within this concept two opposing interaction systems coexist: the materiality of a pop-up book and the impalpability of virtual images played on the book. In this way it is possible to play with imaginary scenarios through the touch of a real paper surface. In our world, that is always more virtual and inconsistent, this project can be seen as an instrument of union between traditions and future technological developments.

Alla base di questo elaborato di tesi c’è la volontà di riuscire a ideare un concept che permetta un nuovo modo di interazione e integrazione tra i libri e sistemi di realtà aumentata. L’analisi a proposito di questa tecnologia sempre più diffusa, ha portato alla luce le sue peculiarità e le sue innumerevoli sfaccettature, evidenziandone le molteplici possibilità d’uso e mostrandone le sue potenzialità e i suoi limiti. Uno degli obiettivi fondamentali di questo concept è stato quello di realizzare un’interazione concreta e tangibile tra mondo reale e mondo virtuale, allontanandosi così dall’interfaccia dei touchscreen, sempre più spesso utilizzata con la realtà aumentata, e riavvicinandosi all’uso tradizionale dei libri, non come mero supporto sovrastato da un display, ma come strumento indispensabile per la lettura e il gioco. Il sistema ideato è quindi un libro di favole per bambini, in cui la storia si crea, si evolve e può essere modificata sotto i loro stessi occhi. All’interno di questo concept sono stati affiancati e coesistono due sistemi di interazione opposti tra di loro, quali la matericità di un libro pop-up e l’impalpabilità di immagini virtuali proiettate su di esso. In questo modo è possibile giocare con scenari immaginari attraverso il tocco di una superficie cartacea reale. In questo mondo ormai sempre più virtuale e inconsistente, questo progetto si pone come strumento di unione tra la tradizione e gli sviluppi tecnologici futuri.
