Jan Gehl's theories in practice. A comparative study of three urban projects in Sydney, Shanghai and Milan

This thesis focuses on the relationship between theory and practice of urban design in the work of Jan Gehl. The international scope of his work seems significant and allows to see and compare the theory and practice of projects in three different urban contexts. In this way it has been possible to verify how a good urban designer with a high considered approach on international level has to deal with the difficulties of the transformation of the contemporary city in Asia, Australia and Europe. The criteria of choice of the cases is the maximum diversification of the contexts (three continents, three distinct planning systems, three cities with stories and trajectories of development that are different among them), to try to answer to the research question: how is the implementation of the theories of Jan Gehl and which is the gap between theory and practice that can be perceived through the analysis and comparison of the three selected case studies. The thesis suggests that the theory of urban design can progress thanks to a renewed attention to practice.

Questa tesi si concentra sul rapporto tra teoria e pratica dell’urban design nel lavoro di Jan Gehl. La portata internazionale del suo operato sembra significativa e permette di vedere e confrontare la teoria e la pratica di progetti in tre contesti urbani differenti. In questo modo è stato possibile verificare come un buon urban designer con un’elevata considerazione a livello internazionale debba fare i conti con le difficoltà della trasformazione della città contemporanea in Asia, Australia ed Europa. I criteri di scelta dei casi è la massima diversificazione dei contesti (tre continenti, tre differenti sistemi di pianificazione, tre città con storie e traiettorie di sviluppo che sono diverse tra di loro), per cercare di trovare la più completa risposta per la domanda di ricerca: com’è l'implementazione nei progetti delle teorie di Jan Gehl e qual è il gap tra teoria e pratica che può essere percepito attraverso l'analisi e il confronto tra i tre casi di studio. La tesi suggerisce che la teoria dell’urban design può progredire grazie a una rinnovata attenzione alla pratica.
