Palasesto: un nuovo centro polisportivo per la riqualificazione del nodo infrastrutturale di S.S.G. Primo Maggio

The project is located in the municipality of Sesto San Giovanni, covering an area from Piazza 1° Maggio to the end of Parco Gramsci, delimited on the borders by the railway station and by Via Gramsci. This section of land is narrow and long about 800 meters gathering crucial functions for the municipality: the hub of interchange among the state railways, the underground line M1 and the bus parking station, the Palasesto building and the Parco Gramsci. Nevertheless, despite this area of the city is daily crossed by copious flows of people and transportation means, the open spaces and the buildings do not communicate between each other and they are not connected within an unique urban drawing because they are independent entities. For this reason, beyond the redesign and the enlargement of the actual building, it is fundamental the sketch of the public space as an element of common and singular design, with the objective to get a sequence of following open and built spaces that allows a unique concept of the entire area. Moreover, the urban renewal of Renzo Piano for the former Area Falck becomes an opportunity to rethink about this portion of city as a crucial and strategic point of interconnection between the historic urban pattern of Sesto San Giovanni and the transformation area. Firstly, our intervention was focused on the new Palasesto that becomes a sports centre aimed at turning into a big attractive metropolitan hub. The building is made up of three blocks, composed by a continuous glass earthwork that creates a direct contact with the adjacent public spaces. Above this earthwork are located two volumes with different dimensions that include respectively the hockey stadium, oriented towards the stations and the square, and the fitness centre with swimming pools, gyms, spa, oriented towards the park. In the middle, a courtyard get access to the main entry points of the building and to the shopping spaces. Secondly, we shifted our attention to the rearrangement of the infrastructural hub through a new bridge railway station that links the old part of the city of Sesto San Giovanni with the newest of the Renzo Piano’s masterplan, and to a big platform roof that will host the bus station. The two interventions are linked with a series of public spaces that restore the city some places of community that was previously intended only for the transit of transportation means. Finally, we decided to redraw Parco Gramsci, which is downsized in order to embrace the enlargement of the sport centre, in particular the solarium of the swimming pools. It is expected a footbridge that links the park with the new system of green spaces beyond the railway.

Il progetto si colloca nel comune di Sesto San Giovanni, in un’area che si estende da piazza 1° Maggio fino al termine di Parco Gramsci, delimitata ai margini dalla linea ferroviaria e da viale Gramsci. Questo lotto stretto e lungo circa 800 metri ospita importanti funzioni per il comune: il nodo di interscambio tra le ferrovie dello stato, la linea metropolitana M1 e la stazione degli autobus; il Palasesto; il Parco Gramsci. Tuttavia, nonostante questa zona della città sia quotidianamente attraversata da flussi abbondanti di persone e mezzi, gli spazi aperti e gli edifici presenti non dialogano tra loro e non sono connessi all’interno di un disegno urbano unitario poiché sono realtà indipendenti. Per questo motivo, oltre la riprogettazione e l’ampliamento degli edifici esistenti, è fondamentale il disegno dello spazio pubblico come elemento di unità progettuale, con l’obiettivo di ottenere una sequenza di spazi costruiti e non che si susseguono permettendo una lettura unitaria dell’intera area. Inoltre, il progetto di riqualificazione di Renzo Piano per l’ex- Area Falck diventa occasione per ripensare a questo brano di città come punto nevralgico di connessione tra il tessuto consolidato di Sesto San Giovanni e l’area in trasformazione. Il nostro intervento si è concentrato in primo luogo sul nuovo Palasesto che diventa un centro polisportivo, con l’obiettivo di porsi come grande polo attrattivo metropolitano. L’edificio è tripartito, costituito da un basamento continuo vetrato che instaura un dialogo diretto con gli spazi pubblici adiacenti. Sopra questo basamento vengono collocati due volumi con differenti dimensioni che ospitano rispettivamente lo stadio dell’Hockey, rivolto verso la stazione e la grande piazza, e il centro fitness con piscine, palestre, spa, affacciato sul parco. Al centro, una corte distribuisce gli accessi principali al complesso e gli spazi commerciali. In secondo luogo abbiamo spostato la nostra attenzione sulla risistemazione del nodo infrastrutturale attraverso una nuova stazione ferroviaria a ponte che collega la città consolidata e la nuova città che sorgerà nell’ex area Falk, e una grande pensilina che ospita la stazione degli autobus. I due interventi vengono messi in relazione da una sequenza di spazi pubblici minerali che restituiscono alla città luoghi di socialità che prima erano destinati esclusivamente al transito dei mezzi. Infine, abbiamo ritenuto opportuno ridisegnare Parco Gramsci, che viene ridimensionato per accogliere l’ampliamento del centro sportivo, in particolare il solarium delle piscine. E’ previsto un collegamento ciclopedonale che collega il parco con il nuovo sistema dei verdi al di là della ferrovia.
