Progetto di recupero e rifunzionalizzazione della ex Caserma Garibaldi a biblioteca, Varese, Piazza della Repubblica

This thesis is about the refurbishment of the former Caserma Garibaldi (Garibaldi Barracks in English) in the town of Varese. The project originates from the competition notice launched by the town hall of Varese which had the purpose of merging the library system of Varese in a unique library, to be located in the abandoned barracks. Our work started from the requirements set by the competition notice, then we focused on the definition of contemporary library, investigating all the architectonic typologies that best represented the theme. The analysis of the historical and urban context guided us towards the important decision of safeguarding the pre-existing building, integrating it with a new construction with the aim to renovate the inner courtyard. After a careful study of the current state, we focused on the functional standards of the project itself: we verified the structure of the barracks from a legal point of view, then we planned the intervention of refurbishment and consolidation of the historical building, proposing structural solutions that would be in line with the law and the historical building. In terms of the new construction, the focus was all about the structure. In particular we studied the overhanging auditorium, and in general we investigated all the structural typologies of the entire project. We also studied the light and the technologies characterising the volume of the lighthouse, an iconic element of the project. This work enabled us to investigate a complex theme, full of many different viewpoints , that have been summarised in this architectural project which is both coherent and functional.

Il lavoro di tesi riguarda il recupero e la rifunzionalizzazione della ex-Caserma Garibaldi di Varese. Il progetto trae le sue origini dal bando di concorso indetto dall’Ente comunale che prevedeva di riunire tutto il sistema bibliotecario varesino in un’unica biblioteca, da situarsi nella dismessa e inagibile caserma. Il nostro lavoro è partito dalle richieste previste dal bando, si è poi concentrato sulla definizione di biblioteca contemporanea, andando quindi a indagare le varie tipologie architettoniche che meglio interpretano il tema. L’analisi del contesto storico e urbano ci ha guidati nella scelta di recuperare la preesistenza integrandola con una nuova costruzione, che andasse a ricostituire la corte interna. A seguito di una attenta analisi dello stato di fatto, l’iter progettuale si è concentrato sui requisiti funzionali del progetto: si è andati a verificare normativamente la struttura della caserma, successivamente è stato steso il piano di intervento di recupero e consolidamento dell’edificio storico proponendo soluzioni strutturali in accordo alle normative vigenti e rispettose della preesistenza. Per quanto riguarda l’ampliamento, il focus è stato di tipo strutturale nello studio dell’aggetto contenente l’auditorium e più in generale nelle tipologie strutturali impiegate; e di tipo illuminotecnico e tecnologico, per quanto riguarda il volume della lanterna, elemento iconico dell’intero lavoro. Il lavoro di tesi ci ha quindi permesso di affrontare un tema complesso e ricco di differenti sfaccettature che sono state portate a sintesi in un progetto architettonico coerente e funzionale.
