Cryogenic treatments represent a relatively new technology which has been developed over the past few decades with the aim of improving the performances of different types of materials through unconventional treating practices. The beneficial effects of such processes on a variety of steels are well documented in the literature, even though their influences on other materials, aluminium and its alloys included, have yet to be determined. The lack of a reliable understanding of the mechanisms involved in the cryogenic processing of non-ferrous materials, alongside with the conflicting results of several research programs conducted on the subject, have made the scientific community skeptical about its potentialities. Nevertheless, the industrial applications of such treatments are constantly growing, promising benefits which are still difficult to comprehend. The present thesis has been developed to evaluate the effects of such treatments on the 7050 aluminium alloy brought to different tempers, with the aim of clarifying how the exposure to cryogenic temperatures can affect its properties. Conventional mechanical and corrosion tests will be conducted alongside with dilatometric analyses to investigate the influence of cryogenic treatments on the final properties of the alloy as well as on its precipitation kinetics.

Abstract
Conventional mechanical and corrosion tests will be conducted alongside with dilatometric analyses to investigate the influence of cryogenic treatments on the final properties of the alloy as well as on its precipitation kinetics.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
