Reveler la Seine : prospettive ibride per la città di Parigi

The current economic, political and social dynamics have had profound transformations in the contemporary city, on its physical form and on the social structure, determining a complex stratification of networks, flows, architectures and places of memory. The awareness of this complexity tends to produce an architecture based on non-univocal and non-determined theories, multifaceted and continuously diversified. It is, therefore, in the unexpected and indeterminacy that possible openings may occur. The thesis aims to propose a critical reflection on the tools of the project and on the strategies of urban transformation, proposing the hybrid as a fertile condition through which to intervene in the contemporary city and from which to reformulate the new relationship between architecture and place. The goal is to overcome a vision that tends to schematize the complex ambiguities of the contemporary city within a rigid cataloging, to favor the indeterminacy of the processes, the heterogeneity and the difference. The hybrid is therefore an effective tool for its innate vocation to produce relationships, acting in that intermediate system in the urban structure and configuring the relationship that exists between the object and the space, between density and expansion, between inside and outside: the space of relationship. The research finds application in the case study of Paris, reality that exemplifies the complexity of the current urban condition, through the design of two fragile areas, supported by a strategic system that connects them, reinforcing them and giving life to new flows, activities, places . The two areas taken into consideration are closely related to the river Seine, and present important differences between them, on the one hand there is the area including Parc Saint-Perine, strongly influenced by the nearby Parc Citroen, which will host a combined program of offices with temporary residences; on the other hand, we find the area in front of the Radio building, jutting out onto the river Seine, which will link the program of a library with that of thermal bath. The thesis considers the traditional dichotomies (public-private, internal-external, above-below) investigating them not as antithetical couples, but as pairs to try to grasp the potential of their union. And it is through comparison with these dichotomies that the thesis deals with the theme of the hybrid and its perspectives, in a narration on parallel tracks, which compares the two projects to lead them to a univocal conclusion: the hybrid interpreted not as deformation of the form, but as a formal hybridization, and therefore a structural one, since it originates from the type understood as the profound structure of architecture. In conclusion, the attempt was to ask questions rather than solutions. Reasoning on the theme of hybrid as a design response to the complex conditions of the contemporary city. The research tries to conduct a design experiment that does not present itself as definitive, but develops ideas and builds tools, through an internal look at urban planning.

Le dinamiche economiche, politiche e sociali attuali hanno inciso profonde trasformazioni nella città contemporanea, sulla sua forma fisica e sulla struttura sociale, determinando una complessa stratificazione di reti, flussi, architetture e luoghi della memoria. La consapevolezza di tale complessità tende a produrre un’architettura basata su teorie non univoche e non determinate, poliedrica e continuamente diversificata. È, quindi, nell’imprevisto e nell’indeterminatezza che possono darsi possibili aperture. La tesi vuole proporre una riflessione critica sugli strumenti del progetto e sulle strategie di trasformazione urbana, proponendo l’ibrido come una condizione fertile attraverso cui intervenire nella città contemporanea e da cui poter riformulare il nuovo rapporto tra architettura e luogo. L’obiettivo è quello di superare una visione che tenda a schematizzare le complesse ambiguità della città contemporanea entro una rigida catalogazione, per privilegiare l’indeterminatezza dei processi, l’eterogeneità e la differenza. L’ibrido risulta dunque strumento efficace per la sua vocazione innata a produrre relazioni, agendo in quel sistema intermedio nella struttura urbana e configurando il rapporto che intercorre tra l’oggetto e lo spazio, tra densità e dilatazione, tra interno ed esterno: lo spazio di relazione. La ricerca trova applicazione nel caso studio di Parigi, realtà che esemplifica la complessità della condizione urbana attuale, attraverso la progettazione di due aree fragili, supportate da un sistema strategico che le mette in relazione, rafforzandole e dando vita a nuovi flussi, attività, luoghi. Le due aree prese in considerazione sono in stretta relazione con il fiume Senna, e presentano importanti differenze tra loro, da una parte vi è l’area comprendente Parc Saint-Perine, fortemente influenzata dal vicino Parc Citroen, che ospiterà un programma combinato di uffici con residenze temporanee; d’altra parte si ritrova l’area antestante l’edificio della Radio, aggettante sul fiume Senna, che metterà in relazione il programma di una libreria con quello di un centro termale. La tesi considera le dicotomie tradizionali (pubblico-privato, interno-esterno, sopra-sotto) indagandole non come coppie antitetiche, ma come coppie binomiali per tentare di cogliere le potenzialità della loro unione. Ed è attraverso il confronto con queste dicotomie che la tesi affronta il tema dell’ibrido e le sue prospettive, in una narrazione su binari paralleli, che mette a confronto i due progetti per condurli ad una conclusione univoca: l’ibrido interpretato non come deformazione della forma, ma come ibridazione formale, e quindi strutturale, poiché ha origine dal tipo inteso come struttura profonda dell’architettura. In conclusione, il tentativo è stato quello di porre interrogativi piuttosto che soluzioni. Ragionando sul tema dell’ibrido come risposta progettuale alle complesse condizioni della città contemporanea. La ricerca prova a condurre quindi una sperimentazione progettuale che non si presenta come definitiva, ma sviluppa idee e costruisce strumenti, attraverso una sguardo interno alla progettazione urbana.
