To characterize the mechanics and the deformation mechanisms of heterogeneous materials is a relevant task towards the assessment of reliability and performances. Depending on the structural configuration of a material during service, there are several methods to address mechanical characterization: for planar materials, biaxial testing is a suitable and versatile technique. The goal of this thesis is the design and development of a miniaturized testing device to enable biaxial tests with simultaneous (i.e., in situ) microscopic observation. The motivation of the study is to allow the investigation of a material at both macroscopic (i.e., effective) and microstructural (i.e., local) level and elucidate the relationships between the behaviour observed at different length scales. The capabilities of the biaxial device were demonstrated with a preliminary study of the mechanics of a fabric biomaterial, specifically a silk-based fabric for vascular grafts.

Abstract
The capabilities of the biaxial device were demonstrated with a preliminary study of the mechanics of a fabric biomaterial, specifically a silk-based fabric for vascular grafts.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
