Intangible borders. An approach to inherit the Atlantic Rampart

The Atlantic Wall The Atlantic Wall is a defence infrastructure running through the Continental Europe for 2670 Km. This system, which was activate from the Nazi during the 1942-44 to prevent an allies attack, is now falling in obsolescence. How to deal then with an heritage which is refused from the past generations (because of the war experience), it is not known and considered for a positive use from the new one, but moreover is currently not accessible for a human use? How to deal with its scale? By analyzing the Atlantic Wall system it is visible that differently from the past linear wall systems, such the Roman and the Chinese one, this is not a continuous structure but instead a network of scattered elements working toghether in a system. This elements are then also connected in term of material, use and tipology. The Atlantic Wall has been thaught as a totally uncontextualyzed infrastructure, but there are recurring situations where this element deals with the context in order to take advantage of it. Ist Context? The analysis will have a special focus on these points, to understand of which nature is the relation between borders: The Atlantic Wall and the context it is placed in. Running through the Atlantic Wall we could resume Three main scenarios 1. Defensive elements lying in the coastal landscape 2. Defensive elements Integrated in an older defensive structure belonging to medieval or reinassance time 3. Places of Memories, which are strong moral episodes that happened in one specific place, but without leaving physical traces of this fact. Facts passed down through the oral collective remembrance. The Island In between the French and the English coast, one of the most beaten areas from the Nazi war action, seems to be condensed in a 12sqM Island all the AW typical scenario previously mentioned. In the Island of Alderney take place a systemic approach on how to inherit the AW heritage, with the aim to make it accessible for a public use, experience and memory. After a deep analysys of the island historycal and natural background, are identifyed three main layers that are more influencing the island history, experience and use, throughout the years. These are for example, the Victorian Heritage, The WW2 Heritage and the Wildlife, which nowadays seems to be the strongest one because of its generous presence insisting on the previous two. What is in common to these layers is their autonomous nature despite the context, where each of them declare an own indipendence in a precise portion of space. Each of these systems, took advantage of the place where they stand on, with an own language and logic (the one of the time it belongs), often readable from the specificity of materials and tipological elements. According to this fact, we could rather say that each layer is an own semantic insisting on the same ground. Alderney a Semantic of Fileds We could also observe that in some special situation these “Semantics” overlap in the same field of action, By standing on the same ground, are created borders of misunderstanding, powerful places that in the past were fullfilling a precise aim and strategy, are now alike a collection of icons, at our eyes. Projected in the site specific you understand that something there was happening, you can still hear the echo of the reason they came at life, but the logics are mixed, unclear to the eyes. Still each system carryes an own hyerarchy, perceptible but not understandable. Intangible borders In these “Intangible borders” a projectual statement will take place. The aim is to mark the borders between these semantics and make them physical, to understand the historical hidden connections and to re-activate the place for a public use.

L´ Atlantic Wall e´ una struttura difensiva che si estende lungo l´ Europa Continentale per 2670Km. Questo sistema, attivato dal regime Nazista negli anni dal 1942 al 1944 e ideato per difendere I confini del Reich, si presenta oggi come un sistema obsolete e dimenticato. Come confrontarsi quindi con un patrimonio che viene rifiutato e non tramandato dale generazioni passate (a causa del ricordo della guerra), non e´ conosiuto e considerato per un uso propositivo dale generazioni attuali, e infine non e´ accessibile per il pieno insediamenti di attivita´ umane? Come confrontarsi con la sua scala? Attraverso una analisi dell´ Atlantic Wall inteso come sistema, emerge che, a differenza dei sistemi difensivi del passato, come il Vallo di Adriano o la Muraglia Cinese, che si manifestano come vere e proprie barrier fisiche, l´ Atlantik Wall si costituisce invece di una rete di vari elementi indipendenti, coalizzati a una commune strategia di difesa. Questi elementi sono connessi tra di loro anche in termini di materiali, tipologia e funzione. L´ Atlantik Wall e´ stata pensata come una infrastruttura sottocutanea, noncurante del suo intorno. Ci sono pero´ situazioni ricorrenti nell´intero sistema, dove questa macchina, per riuscire nel suo intento difensivo, e´ forzata a relazionarsi col contesto e a cercare un dialogo, anche se monodirezionale, tra terreno e tipologia. Il contesto dell´ Atlantik Wall L´analisi avra´ un focus specifico attorno agli scenari ricorrenti dell´Atlantik Wall del suo modo di interagire col contesto. Il fine progettuale sara´ quello di evidenziare e rendere tangibile al pubblico la deformazione attuata dall´inserimento dell´ Atlantik Wall nel contesto. Questi segni riaffioreranno manifesti in architetture nel paesaggio che saranno di supporto all´ accesso dell´ uomo in questi luoghi impervi e di aiuto alla riappropriazione di un patrimonio non ancora ereditato e assimilato. Attraversando il Muro Atlantico, si possono riassumere principalmente tre scenari interessanti, di come questa gigantesca infrastruttura sia solita ad appropriarsi del contesto: 1- Elementi difensivi nel paesaggio costiero 2- Elementi difensivi integrati in una precedente struttura difensiva 3- Luoghi della memoria, dove forti episodi sono accaduti e tutt´ ora ricordati nella memoria orale collettiva. La formulazione di un Approccio Progettuale: Se l´ Atlantic Wall presenta una scala trans- continentale, l´ approccio formulato vuole piuttosto agire sulla scala locale per relazionarsi col luogo e le persone. Questo e´ reso possible dalla storia e dalle stratificazioni culturali e paesaggistiche dell´Isola di Alderney. Isola situata nelle Channel island, con una superficie di 12Km 2, Alderney e´ stata pesantemente fortificata dagli interventi Nazisti e in seguito nominata una delle mega fortezze di Hitler. Essa raccoglie in se´ tutti gli scenari ricorrenti che alla larga scala si erano evidenziati sul sistema del Muro Atlantico, e su questa scala locale, verranno evidenziate tre aree sensibili dove testare un intervento di riappropriazione culturale, spaziale e di significato di questo patrimonio, gia´ dimenticato ancora prima di essere conosciuto.
