Theatre academy Berlin : the space of the theatre

"Theare Academy Berlin" is the result of a collective journey that began in the Architectural Design Studio and progressed for the entire duration of the study programme with its culmination in a project proposal for a Theatre Academy in the city center of Berlin. This thesis follows a tripartite framework with its principal chapters of Theme, Form and Construction. These three summarize the theoretical foundations and formal results of the project. Within this common framework, the project also includes additional theoretical and formal analytical readings that take their form in four research boards, which themselves are divided in a bipartite fashion following the division of the thesis itself: while two of these follow "Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the Theatre," the others necessarily and complementarily follow "Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the Theatre" for an overall complete comprehension of the entirety of the project. "The Theme" of the project originates in an interpretation of the constructive elements of the city of Berlin as they manifest within the specific site of the project. These are: the artificial linear systems, which define the site as a place of intersection; the river Spree and its corresponding green areas, which together act as territorial continuity that pause in the project site; finally, the different formal systems that together make Berlin an additive city. This specific interpretation of these systems brings forth the necessity of a Primary Form as a marker for the intersection of the aforementioned axes (Intersection), that orients itself based on the Friedrichstadt grid (Edge). The Primary Form also acts as the margine of a spatial sequence that begins in the Museum Island and develops along the river Spree (Margine). The tie between the Primary Form and the Museum Island and the specific spatial sequence born from this mediation is the object of the in-depth analysis within the first research board. The second board follows, exploring the role of the Primary Form in the transformation of its fragmented context into which the Composite Form is introduced, defined, and implemented; this Composite Form is both coherent and necessary to the interpretation of the site. "The Form" constitutes the core of the thesis, illustrating and enriching the formal component of the project and inextricably linking "Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the City" with "Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the Theatre". The complexity of the Theatre Space and the Primary Form emerge throughout the proposed analytical readings found in the second two research boards. Specifically, the Space of the Theatre is comprised of different constructive elements, each of which contributes to the concretization of a specific idea of theatre and the corresponding spatial configuration. The analytical reading of the last research board identifies said order and provides a tripartite interpretation of the system of spaces of three buildings, based on the framework of complementarity between the morphological construction elements and the space defined between them. The previous analytical reading finds its conclusion in "Construction," in which the technological and constructive systems are the result of the formal system of the theatre building in all its complexity and totality, to maximum completion. To conclude, Theatre Academy Berlin interprets the idea of theatre as a cultural institution and as an urban space, allowing it to become the protagonist of a spatial sequence that begins in the Lustgarten and concludes with a grand view back upon the city of Berlin.

Theatre Academy Berlin è il risultato di un percorso collettivo iniziato all'interno del Laboratorio di progettazione dell'Architettura, evolutosi durante l'intera durata del corso di studi e culminato in una proposta di progetto per un' Accademia Teatrale nel centro di Berlino. Quest'ultimo si struttura seguendo i capitoli di Tema, Forma e Costruzione, che riassumono i fondamenti teorici e i risultati formali del progetto. All'interno di questa cornice comune, si inseriscono approfondimenti analitici e progettuali che assumono la forma di quattro tavole tematiche, a due a due riferite alla bipartizione della tesi in: Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the City e Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the Theatre necessarie e complementari l'una all'altra al fine di una completa comprensione. Il Tema di progetto ha origine da un' interpretazione degli elementi costitutivi della città di Berlino e di come essi si manifestano nello specifico sito. Dall'interpretazione di tali sistemi, la necessità di collocare sul sito un Forma Primaria orientata secondo la griglia ideale della Friedrichstadt e posizionata all'intersezione dei principali assi. La Forma Primaria costituisce il margine di una sequenza spaziale, che si snoda lungo il fiume e si origina nell'Isola dei Musei. La relazione che lega la Forma Primaria ed il Progetto all'isola dei Musei, mediante la definizione di una specifica sequenza spaziale è oggetto di approfondimento della prima tavola tematica. Ad essa segue la seconda, che indaga il ruolo dell Forma Primaria nella trasformazione del contesto frammentario nella quale si inserisce, introducento e determinando la Forma Composita. La Forma costituisce il corpo centrale ed in essa viene illustrato ed approfondito il compimento formale del progetto, che lega necessariamente Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the City e Theatre Academy Berlin: The Space of the Theatre. La complessità dello Spazio Teatrale e della Forma Primaria, emergono attraverso la lettura analitica proposta nelle ultime tavole di approfondimento tematico. Nello specifico, lo Spazio del Teatro si compone di elementi differenti elementi costitutivi, ciascuno dei quali contribuisce alla concretizzazione di una specifica idea di teatro ed alla sua coerente configurazione spaziale. La lettura analitica dell'ultima tavola tematica identifica tale ordine e fornisce una triplice lettura del sistema di spazio dell'edificio, che si fonda sulla complementarietà tra gli elementi morfologici della costruzione e lo spazio da essi definito . La precedente lettura analitica trova la propria conclusione in Costruzione, dove i sistemi tecnologici e costruttivi sono il risultato e il compimento massimo del sistema formale dell'edificio teatrale, in tutta la sua complessità e totalità. In conclusione, Theatre Academy Berlin interpreta l'idea di Teatro come istituzione culturale e come Spazio urbano, pertanto diviene protagonista di una sequenza spaziale che si origina nel Lust Garten e si conclude con uno sguardo rivolto alla città di Berlino.
