The design area is located in the Chinese metropolis of Xi'an, former capital city of the Chinese empire, and is precisely set in the Southeast corner of the defensive wall built by Ming dynasty, in a space that was excluded from the city after its shrank due to the fallen of Tang dynasty, and then returned to be part of the city after the medieval wall construction. The area has been undeveloped until the beginning of the 30s when became an interesting target for the establishment of an industrial area, whose configuration has been changed during the 70s because of the variation in the productive process. The factory has been abandoned in the end of the 90s, when started to be occupied by a spontaneously-formed marketplace, which spread in the main buildings and in the nearby alleys, and is nowadays the pulsing core of the whole area. Because of the complex historical vicissitudes and the demolitions and reconstructions that have succeeded in recent times, the area looks badly organized, with lots of dilapidated or high-exceeding buildings, which create a bad relationship with the medieval wall. The aim of the project is to understand the historical and morphological complexity of the Ming city, and in particular the identification of the original Pingrong Factory compound, in order to reconstitute a layout that gives a specific clarity and identity to the area, in respect of customary human activities arose spontaneously. Through the preservation and redevelopment of two important industrial buildings, which have remained up to now in the background because of the superfetations that overcrowd the area, we intend to define a new central nucleus, destined for various activities as service for the inhabitants and able to play a landmark role. The hierarchical role of this building is also emphasized by the placement in the center of a large plate that highlights the size of the original industrial compound and positioned above an underground space, inside which the market system is relocated. The space thus defined is enlightened by patios, sized on the basis of the courtyards of previous productive buildings, which were demolished to reserve enough space for the most recent configuration of the industrial area. The intervention is completed with the construction of an inhabited wall-type building that, along the border directly related to the medieval walls, replaces the disordered and precarious residential buildings, whose fragmentation and evident poor quality is not able to support the relationship with the important historical artefact. The building tries to give back to the city the traditional lost morphology, through the partition in sequential courtyards defined by a serpentine path that performs a panoramic and distributive function for the courts and the volumes that alternate within it. The boundary thus defined mediates a relationship between the present and the past, marking the borders of the existing block consistent with the recently built constructions, but showing a nature deriving from the reinterpretation of vernacular types. Together with the reorganization of the former industrial area, an almost lost identity is returned to this portion of the city, in order to emerge as an example for a future redevelopment that considers all the areas adjacent to the medieval walls, for the preservation of an historical heritage and the enhancement of an urban uniqueness, proposing itself as a target for the modern Chinese metropolis.
