The problem of contemporary village is more important now than ever. As cities grow and expand their influence on adjacent rural settlements. As this invasion takes place, the landscape is transformed and agricultural activities are threatened. Villages are gradually disappearing and, in thirty-fifty years, we risk to lose them forever. This process leads to the strengthening of many global problems such as hunger. In Asian Mediterranean, a village who meets the city is called “Desakota”. (Indonesian: DESA – village, KOTA – city). More and more theoretical researches and practical attempts are devoted to the phenomenon of the modern village and its development. The goal of this project was to study the issue of Desakota and try to find a suitable formula for its development. We wanted to use the language of the urban environment, without destroying the life style of Indonesian farmers, which has to be integrated and modernized. We analysed various theoretical studies of the Desakota phenomenon around the world and in Indonesia particularly, conducted observations and photo-fixation of the area, studied different programs and projects dedicated to solve the problems of the modern village. The focus of our research was laid on the problem of villages dieback, due to the abandonment of locals, in search of higher salaries and better living conditions. While studying this topic, we identified different problems, which the modern villagers must face every day. Our task was to transform these problems into potentials. The key factors of our project were the inhabitants low education level and the diffused heavy manual labor, having low economic profitability. We have developed the project of an agricultural research center, which includes various levels of educational programs for the population and visitors of the village. The center is a modular linear park, based on the village internal morphology and can be replicated in other regions. Architectural choices are based on a rethinking of the classic architecture of Indonesia, using the traditional methods of lighting, ventilation, air conditioning. We wanted to create an effective, harmonious and modern project that contributes to the preservation of the traditional village and will become a natural catalyst for its development in the future.
