The design research of the project concentrates on the Sant’Ana Hill, one of the most important parts in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, and in particular on the area of the project itself – the hospital Santo Antonio dos Capuchos. The area of the Sant’Ana Hill is a very complicated and discussed subject, because of the ongoing and expected closing of most of the hospitals in the area, occupying former convents. Analysing this area of the city requires thorough consideration, and going in-depth of the infrastructural and historical roots of the hill urban structure. The case study of the Santo Antonio dos Capuchos hospital is then examined in detail, from the creation of the convent in the 19th century, up until today, also including the approved project to be realised in the year 2020 by Lobos Arquitectos. The proposal is highly intervening, as more than 23 000 m2 (more than 60% of the built up area) is to be demolished and replaced by huge residential buildings. The area is indeed in demand of new residential units, but the approved proposition is highly invasive. Taking into consideration the conclusions drawn from the thorough analysis, the Lobos project and the tendencies of the current millennium, a conceptual proposal is introduced, leaded by the idea of the needs of the millennium generation and the gaining more and more popularity trend of lifestyle community centres or complexes. Millennials have come of age during a time of technological change, globalization and economic disruption. That’s given them a different set of behaviours and experiences than their parents. Millennials want and need experiences, socialising in co-existing environments, filled with diverse endeavours. That's why blending the public and private, creating mixed-use developments, spaces and places is in demand. The lifestyle centre itself is a place where people can gather, stroll and socialize, a complex making real connections with the surrounding community, concentrating more on details like signage, pavement, facades, plantings, fountains, side walks and stores with quirky and unique styles. The main idea of the project is to propose a solution, satisfying the “Live, Work, Play” Syndrome of the younger generations, by reinventing the lifestyle community complex. The proposal includes new residential units, but is strongly oriented towards preserving the most important existing buildings of the Santo Antonio dos Capuchos Hospital, because of their historical heritage, impressive structures and semi-preserved state. Interventions are taken into consideration, transforming the existing buildings into more open public spaces, filled with different cultural, artistic, leisure and working activities. A landscape solution is also proposed, providing pedestrian friendly areas, panoramic views and inviting meeting spaces. Mixing all of the elements into one place makes the creation of the Sant’Ana Hill’s Reinvented Lifestyle Complex, where people can share day everyday life experiences possible.
