ArCORE As a title for our project we have chosen to draw attention on the centrality that the Borromeo d'Adda villa has covered, and still maintains, for the town of Arcore (MB), connecting the name of the city to the concept of core. The idea of centre and essence linked to the word core perfectly renders the role of this mansion as the heart of the surrounding town. The paper deals with the conservative restoration and the refunctionalization of the Borromeo d'Adda villa and its park, two dimensions of the same system jointly developed through history till the present day. Arcore’s local administration and the city’s mayor Rosalba Colombo provided us with the real client, specifying the project's aim and giving us the opportunity to work side by side with the planning group that was employed for the actual restoration of the villa. During the construction phase, our work was committed to the diagnostic aspects on the building with thermographic investigations and a microclimatic monitoring lasting over 10 months. The greater part of our project was devoted to the restoration of the Borromeo d'Adda villa, and to the developing of the concept of the villa as a container of ideas and as a place apt to accommodate the city’s various necessities. The project’s complexity derived from the need to combine conservative restoration criteria, the necessity of varied applications and the current technical standards. Restoration work on the building was organised along with highly technological interventions, aimed at solving various problems related to the refunctionalization of the villa. Part of the project focuses on the basement level for which a special exhibition system was designed, inspired by the work of Franco Albini. Particular attention was given to the restoration of one of the most complex areas of the villa, the ghiacciaia, the ice-house of the mansion for which a suspended walkway was designed, as integral part of the new multimedia exhibition system. A new entrance was also created to make the basement independent from the upper levels. The second part of the project was devoted to the expansion of the usable area of the park and to the solving of some connection problems existing between the park and the city. Our study on the park’s structure led to the inclusion of new functions that aim to increase visitors, reflecting on the project in the creation of a linear path across the surface of the entire park. The trail consists in the construction of a series of buildings, such as an infopoint, a kiosk, a viewpoint, a music pagoda and a reading room, all of which were inspired by the distinctive metal porches of the villa. These architectural features were then adapted to the technological needs of a building in a park.
