Mobile enterprise : a literature review on security and value measurement concerns

Mobile Enterprises have caught the attention of organizations and researchers since the early 2000s. The well-known benefits of Enterprise Mobility have induced companies to initiate projects in this area, and the creation of the huge market of Mobile ICT for business purposes. This dissertation aims to analyze the existing literature on the topic, to find out why many organizations have not started working towards the transformation to a Mobile Enterprise yet, and if there are justified concerns behind this decision. In order to do so, academic and non-academic sources have been reviewed, providing an original view and relevant suggestions for further research. In particular, the focus of this dissertation is on two major concerns that emerged from literature: information security threats and difficulties in measuring the value added of Enterprise Mobility. Therefore, channeling future research towards a comprehensive appraisal framework that could help organizations in the evaluation of strategic, operational and technical aspects of a Mobile Enterprise project.

Le Mobile Enterprise hanno attirato l’attenzione delle organizzazioni e dei ricercatori sin dai primi anni duemila. I noti benefici dell’Enterprise Mobility hanno spinto le aziende ad iniziare progetti in questo campo e stimolato la creazione del consistente mercato delle tecnologie mobile per scopi professionali. Questa dissertazione ambisce ad analizzare la letteratura esistente, per indagare perché ancora molte aziende non hanno iniziato la trasformazione verso una Mobile Enterprise, e se vi sono preoccupazioni giustificate dietro questa decisione. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, sono state revisionate fonti accademiche e non accademiche, che hanno portato a presentare una visione originale del tema e suggerimenti rilevanti per ricerche future. In particolare, l’attenzione di questo lavoro è rivolte alle due principali preoccupazioni emerse dalla letteratura: le minacce di sicurezza delle informazioni e le difficoltà riscontrate dalle organizzazioni nel misurare il valore aggiunto dell’Enterprise Mobility. Conseguentemente direzionando la ricerca verso un framework di valutazione comprensivo, che possa aiutare le organizzazioni nell’analisi degli aspetti strategici, operazionali e tecnici di un progetto nell’ambito delle Mobile Enterprise.
