Foreign direct investments in Indian pharmaceutical industry. Some evidence on performance implications

Indian pharmaceutical industry today is one of the fastest growing player in the global market, distinguished amongst industries of other developing countries around the world and well-established in the market with more advanced competitors. Starting from market occupied with big foreign companies with overpriced medicines, Indian pharma has transformed itself completely and today is able to satisfy domestic consumers and it has become one of the biggest exporter by volume of inexpensive and quality medicines world-wide. This development has followed the regulations government implemented that facilitated arrival of foreign investors, increasing the competition and consequently preparing Indian companies to compete outside of country borders. This work will consider these market changes that helped development of industry’s international involvement and innovative capabilities. Databases Orbis and Zephyr (provided by Bureau Van Dijk), made possible by professor of Leuven University, Filip de Beule, and mentor for this thesis, professor Stefano Elia at Poiltecnico di Milano, enabled access to comprehensive and structured information about pharmaceutical industry in India. Obtained data was analyzed with statistical tools, aiming to investigate the performance levels of different categories and, as main aim of this thesis, determine whether the success of a company in this market is related to its origin. Additionally thesis work turns to theory and literature to explore the phenomenon of foreign investments in order to fully understand Indian pharmaceutical industry.

L’industria farmaceutica dell’India è oggi una delle aziende che si sta più velocemente espandendo nel mercato globale, una stimata azienda tra le industrie dei restanti paesi in via di sviluppo nel mondo e ben posizionata sul mercato, con dei concorrenti di tutto rispetto. Partendo dal mercato occupato da grandi compagnie estere, con farmaci troppo costosi, l’azienda farmaceutica Indiana si è completamente trasformata ed oggi è in grado di soddisfare completamente le necessità dei consumatori nazionali, diventando una dei più grandi esportatori di farmaci a basso prezzo e di buona qualità, secondo il volume d’affari nel mondo. A questo cambiamento si è venuti in seguito ai cambiamenti apportati dalle norme del governo che hanno agevolato gli investitori esteri, aumentando la concorrenza e preparando così le compagnie indiane a concorrere al di fuori del proprio paese. Questo lavoro esaminerà tutti i cambiamenti avvenuti sul mercato che hanno contribuito allo sviluppo dell’inclusione delle industrie all’estero e delle loro capacità innovative. Il database Orbis e Zephyr (accessibile attraverso Bureau Van Dijk), procurato dal Professore dell’università di Leuvenu, Filip De Beule e il relatore di questa tesi, il Professore Stefano Elia del Politecnico di Milano, hanno permesso l’accesso a tutte le informazioni strutturali sull’industria farmaceutica indiana. I dati ottenuti sono stati analizzati con mezzi statistici con l’obiettivo di esplorare il livello della performance delle diverse categorie e come obiettivo principale della presente tesi, stabilire se il successo della compagnia su questo mercato sia legato alle sue origini. Inoltre, il lavoro ruota intorno alla letteratura e alla teoria, al fine di poter esaminare il fenomeno degli investimenti esteri per poter comprendere completamente l’industria farmaceutica indiana.
