The popularity of the mobile app industry is feeding applications provider with a huge amount of data from consumers, coming both from smartphones’ sensors and service usage. This data can be called “user generated Big Data” and provides new business opportunities since companies can use Big Data to gain competitive advantage and to change their business models. Through a case study analysis, we show how leveraging a two-sided structure can enable companies to capture value from user-sourced data, enabling new revenue streams. In this model, users are not just consumers completing a transaction; they become data providers, and companies may capture value by using that data to customize advertising messages, improve their platform, provide insights and sell these data to third parties.

Abstract
The popularity of the mobile app industry is feeding applications provider with a huge amount of data from consumers, coming both from smartphones’ sensors and service usage. This data can be called “user generated Big Data” and provides new business opportunities since companies can use Big Data to gain competitive advantage and to change their business models. Through a case study analysis, we show how leveraging a two-sided structure can enable companies to capture value from user-sourced data, enabling new revenue streams. In this model, users are not just consumers completing a transaction; they become data providers, and companies may capture value by using that data to customize advertising messages, improve their platform, provide insights and sell these data to third parties.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
