The role of innovative supply chain finance solutions on the pharmaceutical and ICT supply chain : the back-to-back model

After ten years of financial crisis, the European and Italian economic systems are finally experiencing the first year of moderate growth according to basically the whole set of macro-economic indicators. The credit market was severely hit by this phase of downturn and that was reverberated onto the business sector of our country through a tighter grip of financing opportunities. This has particularly affected our network of small and medium enterprises, which strictly relies mainly on the bank system in running their day-to-day operations as well as in pursuing investment opportunities for long-term growth. This situation has led firms to look for alternative sources of financing, not only externally but also exploiting more efficiently internal assets. Interesting possibilities are given by working capital management, specifically through an effective alignment between operations and finance which allows the achievement of a better liquidity position and a higher profitability target. Supply Chain Finance provides the tools to carried out this process. In this thesis work we particularly look at how an innovative Supply Chain Finance solution, the Back-to-back model, may affect the relations between actors involved in the Pharmaceutical and ICT supply chain, with a specific focus towards the Public Sector as final customer.

Dopo dieci anni di crisi finanziaria, i sistemi economici europeo e italiano sono finalmente reduci da un anno di crescita moderata, testimoniata dalla positività di tutti i principali indicatori macro-economici. Il mercato creditizio è stato particolarmente colpito dalla passata fase recessiva e questo si è ripercosso negativamente sul tessuto economico della nazione, attraverso una maggiore stretta finanziaria. Questo ha maggiormente impattato le piccole e medie imprese di cui è per lo più composto il nostro sistema paese di aziende, le quali poggiano in maniera rilevante sul sistema bancario come fonte di sostentamento per le normali attività quotidiane, ma anche per intraprendere investimenti produttivi per una crescita di lungo periodo. Questa congiuntura ha costretto le imprese a cercare fonti alternative di finanziamento, non solo all’esterno ma anche tentando di sfruttare opportunità offerte dal loro parco di beni patrimoniali. Interessanti orizzonti sono offerti da un’attenta gestione del capitale circolante, il quale mira a raggiungere migliori condizioni di liquidità ed innalzare il ritorno aziendale mediante un allineamento tra le attività operative e il flusso finanziario. Il Supply Chain Finance offre gli strumenti per portare a termine tale operazione. In questo lavoro di tesi ci siamo particolarmente soffermati a studiare come nuove soluzioni offerte dal Supply Chain Finance, specificatamente il modello Back-to-back, possano impattare sulle relazioni tra i diversi attori della filiera farmaceutica e ICT, con un’attenzione particolare al Settore Pubblico nel ruolo di cliente finale.
