In this research project, in need of the ABB R&D center, Ladenburg, Germany for measuring high currents in one type of ABB’s three-phase DC circuit breaker (CB), we have designed an electronic circuit that performs the analog signal processing of the voltage signal from Hall Effect sensor array that is proportional to the current to be measured. This research project has considered integrating the current measurement of both monitoring and the protection scope in a single product. Two different sensor arrays having sensors with different technology in measuring the nominal current for the monitoring purpose and the fault current for the protection purpose. Experimental activities have been carried out to evaluate and analyze the performance of different prototypes in terms of its linearity error, thermal effect and crosstalk effect for high current measurement. The results from the experimental tests shows the better performance of developed product in terms of Linearity and Thermal drift as its error percentage is within the target limit but the crosstalk of the sensor array in any pole is always two to three times higher than the value estimated from FEM simulation. The reasons for such behavior are deeply investigated by FEM simulation and different solutions regarding this problem have been proposed in terms of calibrating the developed sensor array for high current measurement (SAHM) device for its effective utilization in a 3-phase circuit breaker for the measurement of high current.

Abstract

Current measurement is inevitable in a wide range of electrical and electronics application with different requirements in performance of the measurement devices with respect to its cost, isolation, accuracy, bandwidth, measurement range and size. Magnetics sensors were effectively utilized in numerous fields of applications when there is the availability of magnetic field that can be sensed.
