Continuing on the road of industrial revolution, Industry 4.0 is opening new opportunities and challenges for manufacturing mainly driven by digital technologies. These technologies enable transformed configurations and functionalities of objects, people, factories, and products according to a key paradigm shift: everything is connected. Flexibility, customization, and productivity are the main promises. Anyway, there are still unresolved questions, uncertainties, and challenges which engage all enterprises, government, and academia. SMEs’ usually feel less ready to jump this gap towards industry 4.0 because of the lack of both technologies and capabilities. Since SMEs are a vital part of the European economy, and Industry 4.0 is an unavoidable phenomenon in manufacturing, supporting SMEs in the digital transformation becomes a big concern. The specific choice of the thesis is supporting MEs as recognized to be in an advanced state of transition. On the basis of these considerations, questions arise on which are the MEs’ critical characteristics that may affect their own digital transformation towards industry 4.0; how these drivers affect the MEs’ digital readiness; finally, how these drivers affect MEs’ digital roadmap. In this thesis, with the aim of answering to these questions, firstly, the MEs’ critical characteristics are researched. Secondly, a bridging digital readiness maturity model, on the inspiring principles of the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) framework, has been developed: DREAMY 4. SMEs. DREAMY 4. SMEs is a bridge as it implements the identified MEs’ digital drivers and is able to assess the MEs’ digital readiness in a tailored effective and efficient approach and to set out a digital roadmap to guide MEs. Concretely, the model provides a multi-dimensional digital maturity index, a SWOT analysis, and a table of action items, following a structured methodology. This is an attractive outcome from the companies’ point of view and to this purpose, a case study within a company has been performed in the thesis. The application of the model into the case study, not only provides company usefulness, but also empirical evidences authenticating the model in its aim of supporting MEs in finding their own way towards Industry 4.0.
Percorrendo la strada della rivoluzione industriale, l’Industria 4.0 pone nuove opportunità e sfide al settore manifatturiero, principalmente trainate dalle tecnologie digitali. Queste tecnologie rendono possibili diverse configurazioni e funzionalità di oggetti, persone, fabbriche e prodotti secondo un paradigma chiave: tutto è connesso. Flessibilità, customizzazione e produttività sono le principali promesse. Rimangono comunque questioni irrisolte, incertezze e sfide che coinvolgono tutti, aziende, governo e mondo accademico. Generalmente le PMI si sentono meno pronte a compiere il salto verso l’Industria 4.0 a causa della mancanza di tecnologie e capacità. Poiché le PMI sono una componente vitale dell’economia europea, e contemporaneamente l’Industria 4.0 è un fenomeno inevitabile nel settore manifatturiero, supportare le PMI nella trasformazione digitale diventa un interesse condiviso. In questa tesi è stato deciso di supportare in particolare le Medie Imprese, che si collocano in uno stadio avanzato della transizione. Sulla base di queste considerazioni, ci si chiede quali siano le caratteristiche critiche delle medie imprese che potrebbero avere un impatto sulla loro trasformazione digitale verso l’Industria 4.0; come questi driver impattino la prontezza digitale delle MI e infine, come questi driver impattino il piano d’azione sulla digitalizzazione delle MI. Questa tesi, al fine di rispondere alle suddette domande, prima esamina le caratteristiche critiche delle MI; poi sviluppa un modello di maturità della prontezza digitale ispirato ai principi della struttura del CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration): DREAMY 4.SMEs. DREAMY 4.SMEs rappresenta un ponte nel senso che implementa i driver digitali identificati per le MI nel valutare la prontezza digitale delle MI in un approccio mirato, efficiente ed efficace, e definire il relativo piano d’azione delle MI. Concretamente, il modello, seguendo una metodologia strutturata, genera un indice multi-dimensionale di maturità digitale, una analisi SWOT e una tavola di azioni. Questo è un risultato particolarmente fruibile dal punto di vista delle aziende, a questo scopo un caso di studio in azienda è stato eseguito e presentato nella tesi. L’applicazione del modello al caso di studio, genera non solo utilità per l’azienda, ma anche evidenze empiriche che legittimano il modello e il suo fine di supportare le MI nel trovare la propria strada verso l’Industria 4.0.
