The present work aims to explore the potential of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) for the production of bio-methanol starting from methane gas, through batch and semi-continuous laboratory experiments, with the target of providing preliminary results for the installation of a pilot reactor. Through the study of the literature on the state of the art, the possible known limits to overcome were studied, and through the phases of planning and implementation of the experiments and discussion of the results, the best solutions to be applied to the process were investigated in order to progressively overcome the expected obstacles and the new discovered ones. The purpose of the research was to investigate whether the biological production of methanol was applicable at full scale for an industrial competitive production of bio-methanol, compared to the current industrial applications for the thermochemical production of methanol. On the basis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that the process works, even if further development would be necessary to increase its efficiency and productivity. It could be a viable and desirable way for the reduction of methane emissions and the exploitation for energy purposes of bio-methane produced by landfills and wastewater treatment plants, otherwise considered a waste.

Abstract
It could be a viable and desirable way for the reduction of methane emissions and the exploitation for energy purposes of bio-methane produced by landfills and wastewater treatment plants, otherwise considered a waste.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
