Monitoring Network Performance with Iperf

Information and communication technology (ICT) plays an important role in computer networking and networks are the major component of ICT. Available bandwidth is an important bandwidth metric used today. Traffic Generators are used to generate synthetic traffic to check network performance. Discussion on characteristics and capabilities of these tools help researchers to select particular tool for their application and for developers to find new possibilities of development. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the throughput and delay performance of a local network hosted on a virtual machine by making a graphical user interface (GUI) traffic generator tool on a dedicated server .The traffic generator used in this scenario is iPerf. The thesis will explains the method used to build the control tool, which is called iPerf controller in our scenario, to measure the traffic characteristics of both UDP and TCP protocols.

La tecnologia dell'informazione e della comunicazione (TIC) svolge un ruolo importante nelle reti informatiche e le reti sono la componente principale delle TIC. La larghezza di banda disponibile è una metrica importante utilizzata oggi. I Traffic Generator sono utilizzati per generare traffico sintetico per verificare le prestazioni della rete. La discussione sulle caratteristiche e le capacità di questi strumenti aiuta i ricercatori a selezionare uno strumento particolare per la loro applicazione e gli sviluppatori a trovare nuove possibilità di sviluppo. Lo scopo di questa tesi è valutare il throughput e le prestazioni di ritardo di una rete locale ospitata su una macchina virtuale creando uno strumento di generatore di traffico GUI (graphical user interface) su un server dedicato. Il generatore di traffico utilizzato in questo scenario è iPerf. La tesi illustrerà il metodo utilizzato per costruire lo strumento di controllo, che è chiamato controller iPerf nel nostro scenario, per misurare le caratteristiche del traffico di entrambi i protocolli UDP e TCP.
