The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the thermal and optical properties of a double skin facade proposed for a case study of an office tower located in Tehran, Iran. Conduction, radiation and convection heat transfers in enclosed cavities are well understood and described in guidance documents. However, limited literature is available for the assessment of heat flux within ventilated cavities. Due to the geometry complexity of the proposed cladding system, the ISO standards describing a simplified approach for DSF with parallel skins could not be adopted. Most of the scientific papers available consider the use of CFD simulations requiring a large number of assumptions and material data. With the method presented in this thesis, a SSF equivalent in performance to the DSF can be defined. This data can be input in the building energy model to replace the DSF, significantly reducing the number of thermal zones to be calculated and model complexity, thus minimising computing time and hardware required to complete the energy simulations. This thesis project has been developed during the author’s internship at the London office of the international engineering consultancy WSP.
