M.U.S.A. Macedonian University of Skopje. Art and Craft. Una nuova università per Skopje

The main objective of the thesis is to explore the development of a new university for the city Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The theme of the thesis was developed after various personal trips to Skopje that led me to analyze the current state of the city, while also keeping in mind the various events of the past few years which relate to the new urban vision of the city center and the controversies surrounding the “Skopje 2014” project. By visiting the city, I was able to interact and understand the citizens and the city’s architecture, as well as investigate the urban history and the morale of the population. What surfaced from these interactions is a highly stimulating story tied significantly to the current state of politics, which has been heavily critized in recent years for many of its wrongdoings. Today, with the fall of the government and with the rise to power of a new political party that aims to reinvent Skopje, there is a lot of emphasis and requests for ideas to improve the city and to satisfy the citizen, who are asking for desirable public services, instead of seeing their contributions, in the hands of powerful politicians, wasted on projects that don’t relate and satisfy their requests. The first few chapters provide a geographical overview of Skopje and its urban history, highlighting with the aid of imagery the most important buildings of the city, dating to the period prior to the Earthquake of 1963, which destroyed the majority of the city, as well as the buildings of the subsquent project all the way until those of “Skopje 2014”. Following this overview, more details regarding the project are provided, by highlighting the central idea and concept behind the project all the way until showing the sketch of the project which will be attached to this abstract. M.U.S.A, the new university of Skopje, has as its main objective to develop new student classrooms for teaching, for design and construction; without forgetting the other categories of citizens who live in the area, in particular the surrounding neighborhoods. This new development will act as a new center for urban vitality, with stores facing the main square and providing services to the citizens of the area.

La tesi ha come obiettivo la progettazione di una nuova università per la città di Skopje, capitale della Repubblica di Macedonia. Il tema progettuale è nato dopo svariati viaggi in luogo che mi hanno portato ad un ragionamento sull’attuale stato della città, anche a fronte dei vari eventi avvenuti negli ultimi anni riguardanti la nuova visione urbana del centro e le polemiche insorte dopo l’inizio dei lavori del progetto Skopje 2014. Visitando la città sono entrata a contatto con i cittadini e con le architetture che la formano indagando la storia urbana e cercando di capire lo stato d’animo degli abitanti. Quello che ne è emerso è una storia molto stimolante legata soprattutto al mondo della politica attuale che negli ultimi anni è stata criticata per il suo operato. Oggi con la caduta del governo e l’avvento di un nuovo partito al potere,che mira ad una rinascita di Skopje, quello che viene richiesto sono idee per migliorare la città e soddisfare le aspettative dei cittadini. Questi ultimi infatti desiderano più servizi legati alla sfera pubblica piuttosto che vedere i loro soldi, nelle mani dei potenti, sperperati su un progetto che non li rispecchia. Nei primi capitoli viene esplicata la posizione geografica di Skopje e la sua storia urbana mostrando tramite le immagini gli edifici significativi presenti all’interno del sistema costruito. Questi sono risalenti sia al periodo prima del terremoto del 1963, che rase al suolo maggior parte della città, sia quelli del piano subito successivo, presentato da Tange, fino all’attuale progetto Skopje 2014. Viene poi descritto nel dettaglio il progetto, se ne illustra l’idea di base e il concetto arrivando fino alla rappresentazione delle tavole che verranno qui allegate. MUSA, la nuova università di Skopje ha come obbiettivo di donare agli studenti nuove aule per la didattica, la progettazione e la realizzazione degli elaborati non dimenticandosi delle altre categorie di abitanti presenti sul territorio, in modo specifico nel vicinato, fungendo da nuovo centro per la vitalità urbana.Ospita dunque negozi che si affacciano sulla piazza centrale e fornisce servizi di quartiere.
