Il rapporto tra Università e città. Prospettive europee di innovazione

University and City have an old bond, which has canged over time; indeed University and City are in constant dialogue and usually the campus settlement summarizes the relationship between the two systems. In the past universities have been conceptualized as a city within the city, uneffected by and uninterested in their context, however it is pretty much clear today, that universities are a factor of urban transformation, in economic, social and spatial organisation terms. The university is an element, which influences the development of the contemporary city, so the City is not simply a city that hosts the university in its territory, but it is a city that establishes strategic relationships with it. The question about the relationship between the University and the City concerns the contributions that universities can give to the organization and configuration of the city, its territory and its urban relationship; The aim of the thesis is to study the role of the University in the urban planning processes underlining how its role has strongly changed over time, to show the evolution of the relationship between the elements of the university and the city and to analyze the university's missions emphasising the new mission of the University – the so called "Third Mission". The thesis divided into three parts: The first part reconstructs the main characteristics and dynamics of the topic about the relationship between University and City; Then, the second part briefly describes five European case studies which illustrates in praxis how University and territory interact with each other, stressing the key features of the Enterpreneurial University; Finally, the last part of the thesis focuses on the Italian context. In particular, it focuses on the city of Milan and the case of the new university campus in the area devoted to Expo Milano 2015 and the future scenario for Città Studi after the relocation of the Science Departments of the UNIMI.

Il rapporto tra Università e Città è antico, anche se nel tempo il loro rapporto è cambiato nel tempo, Università e Città convivono da sempre in continuo dialogo. Una città universitaria non è semplicemente una città che ospita un’università sul proprio territorio, ma una città che fa dell’università una delle proprie identità instaurando con essa un rapporto strategico dal punto di vista economico, produttivo ed amministrativo. L’Università è il luogo in cui è prodotta la conoscenza, dove idee e innovazioni confluiscono, perciò i luoghi in cui questi elementi sono messi in pratica possono essere strettamente connessi. L’Università come fattore di trasformazione urbana, nelle sue implicazioni economiche, sociali e di organizzazione spaziale, sta assumendo un significato crescente come elemento capace di influenzare lo sviluppo della città contemporanea. Nonostante l’Università sia un elemento sempre più presente nella realtà urbana delle città, il rapporto tra questi due elementi è un tema che corre il rischio di restare indefinito. In questa tesi il rapporto tra università e città analizzato partendo dal riconoscimento delle significative trasformazioni spaziali che hanno interessato la Città contemporanea in modo da poter individuare in modo critico alcune delle potenzialità di tale rapporto. La prima parte ricostruisce le principali caratteristiche e dinamiche del dibattito sul rapporto tra Università e Città – considerando il ruolo dell'università non solo riferito al suo essere agenzia formativa dedicata istituzionalmente alla produzione e alla divulgazione del sapere, ma osservandola come agente socio-economico e territoriale in grado di generare trasformazioni e di muoversi in modo riflessivo nel contesto. La seconda parte analizza brevemente, in modo descrittivo, cinque casi studio di università europee che hanno svolto un ruolo fondamentale per i loro territori. Infine l’ultima parte della tesi si focalizza sul contesto italiano, in particolare sulla città di Milano analizzando il caso del trasferimento dell’ Università degli Studi di Milano nell’area dedicata a Expo Milano 2015. Il capitolo ripercorre la vicenda Expo focalizzandosi maggiormente sulla fase post-evento.
