Valorizzazione e musealizzazione delle Terme di Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla are the best preserved thermal establishments of the ancient world as well as the second largest public baths of the Roman times after the Baths of Diocletian. Indeed, the today visitors cannot remain indiffrent to the fascination and monumentality of this archeological site. The architectural complex is part of the Appian Way Archaeological Park, whose extension covers the areas from the Palatin hill and beyond the GRA (i.e. the major highway around Rome) until the Villa of the Quintili at the fith mile. The thesis project stems from the idea of modernizing and exploiting the musealization of the Baths of Caracalla by redefiing the southern perimeter. The new designed volumes aim to ameliorate a series of functions, which are essential in an archaeological site characterized by a high flw of visitors. Furthermore, the new design of the museum, on the one hand, allows to display a more adequate and organized exhibition of the copious remains of the site; on the other hand, it presents the relocation of sculpted groups and ornaments (some of them are copies, others are original pieces), which had been taken from the thermal establishments by the Farnese family.

Le Terme di Caracalla, il complesso termale dell’antichità meglio conservato e secondo per dimensioni solo alle Terme di Diocleziano, costituiscono un sito archeologico ricco di fascino e monumentalità cui diffilmente il visitatore può rimanere indiffrente. L’impianto fa parte del più articolato Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica, il quale si sviluppa a partire dal colle del Palatino, fio a toccare la Villa dei Quintili presso il V miglio e superare il Grande Raccordo Anulare. Il progetto di tesi nasce dall’idea di rinnovare e valorizzare la musealizzazione delle Terme Antoniniane attraverso la ridefiizione del perimetro meridionale dell’impianto. I volumi di nuova progettazione vogliono incrementare una serie di funzioni necessarie ad un polo archeologico ad alto flsso di visitatori. Inoltre, con la progettazione di un nuovo spazio museale si vuole offire un’esposizione più dignitosa e ordinata ai tanti frammenti sparsi all’interno del sito, oltre alla ricollocazione di gruppi statuari e altri frammenti dell’apparato decorativo sottratti all’impianto termale dalla famiglia Farnese, attraverso copie e pezzi originali.
