Mothers vs. public interiors : to change, to feed, to survive being a mother in Ukraine

The thesis aims to find out why mothers are still versus public interiors and to find solutions for this problem. Nowadays parents try to keep their social life after a baby is born, but on their way they meet many problems connected with exclusive spaces, lack of caring facilities and negative attitude. Mothers face even more problems due to their breastfeeding activity. Interiors of public buildings can help mothers to be able to socialize and to attend public places with their children. Today Ukraine experiences a fast growth of interest to this topic. The thesis consist of analysis of situation in Ukraine and all over the world, its social and spatial aspects; case studies of parent/baby friendly facilities; interviews with more than one hundred parents; design idea of a portable device for baby care needs in public places. The work leads us to the conclusion that today Ukrainian mothers are still versus public interiors, but due to an interest to this topic from parents the improvement will be seen in a few years.

La tesi si propone di scoprire perché le madri sono ancora contro gli interni pubblici e di trovare soluzioni per questo problema. Al giorno d'oggi i genitori cercano di mantenere la loro vita sociale dopo la nascita di un bambino, ma incontrano molti problemi legati a spazi esclusivi, mancanza di strutture di cura e atteggiamento negativo. Le madri affrontano ancora più problemi a causa della loro attività di allattamento al seno. Gli interni di edifici pubblici possono aiutare le madri a socializzare e frequentare luoghi pubblici con i loro figli. Oggi l'Ucraina sperimenta una rapida crescita di interesse per questo argomento. La tesi consiste in analisi della situazione in Ucraina e in tutto il mondo, i suoi aspetti sociali e spaziali; casi studio di strutture per genitori / bambini; interviste con oltre cento genitori; idea progettuale di un dispositivo portatile per le esigenze di assistenza ai bambini nei luoghi pubblici. Il lavoro ci porta alla conclusione che oggi le madri ucraine sono ancora contro gli interni pubblici, ma a causa di un interesse per questo argomento da parte dei genitori il miglioramento sarà visto in pochi anni.
