The resistance of the enclosure. The University of Sarajevo as urban and autonomous element

During the course of history, Sarajevo has established itself as the crossroad of several migrants’ flows, creating the image of a unique and multi-ethnic city. Because of the coexistence of such different influences the city achieved the epithet of “European Jerusalem”. This continuous mix of flows and persistence contributed to shape the urban form, creating a mosaic of different cultures where the oriental tradition coexists with the legacy of the socialist world. Nowadays, the city appears as the juxtaposition of different parts revealing a contrast between an urban dimension of the city and a super-urban one. Within this framework of diversity, formal invariants are present and recognisable in the composition and typology of civic, religious and other primary buildings. The research shows how the enclosure is the permanent condition which resists the urban transformations, and how its relationship with the isolated objects represents a returning fact in the different areas of the city. Starting from these considerations and from a competition launched in 2017, the thesis focuses on the proposal for the University of Sarajevo campus on the former military area of Marshall Tito Barracks. Core of the project is the central enclosure, a massive suspended mega structure which links the building to the tradition of public and civic buildings spread around the city, while recalling the super-urban character of the Socialist Sarajevo through its formal autonomy and absoluteness. The enclosure persists as the element which mirror the ideas of inclusiveness, horizontality, flexibility that the university should embody nowadays.

Nel corso della storia, Sarajevo si è affermata come crocevia di flussi migratori che hanno dato vita all’immagine di una città multietnica, al punto di essere definita la Gerusalemme d’Europa. Il continuo alternarsi di flussi e preesistenze ha contribuito a modellare il tessuto urbano, creando un mosaico di diverse culture in cui la tradizione orientale si fonde con i lasciti del mondo socialista. Oggi la città si configura come la giustapposizione di parti diverse, rivelando il contrasto tra una dimensione urbana e una super-urbana. In questo contesto di diversità, è tuttavia possibile identificare delle invarianti formali nella composizione degli edifici civili e religiosi. La tesi individua nel recinto il paradigma che resiste alle trasformazioni urbane, rappresentando una condizione ricorrente, nella sua relazione con gli oggetti della città. Queste riflessioni costituiscono il punto di partenza della proposta progettuale per il campus dell’Università di Sarajevo, nell’area dell’ex caserma militare Marshall Tito. A testimoniare la necessità dell’intervento, il concorso bandito dall’Università nel 2017, qui utilizzato come riferimento. Il fulcro del progetto è il recinto sotto forma di mega-struttura cementizia, che richiama il carattere introverso degli edifici storici della città attraverso l’autonomia formale della città socialista. Il recinto, dunque, persiste nella città come elemento orizzontale, flessibile e inclusivo, rispecchiando la visione dell’università su cui questa tesi si basa.
