A hinge for Mombello. La ricucitura di Mombello con il suo ex ospedale psichiatrico

"To judge Architecture, add time to the elements of judgment. Historically, Time is a collaborator-tester of architecture (as of all the arts), it has-says France- its own tools, the sun, the rain, the wind of the North: it always adds something of its own, perennially alive, that we, we artists, must foresee or imagine, giving it our works."Time invests buildings in different ways and manners, modifying their appearance, use, functions: this is a perennial constant, always present from the small village up to the city. Nowadays there are many and various situations in which we face challenges of redevelopment and reinterpretation of spaces once occupied by industries, railways, military structures, and so on.Buildings born and designed to perform functions that cause the change of context are no longer necessary or required, thus creating first of all functional urban voids. This is the situation we find also in Mombello, municipality of Limbiate in Brianza.In this location there is an ex mental hospital, currently in a state of neglect and degradation in almost its entirety. From here start a series of considerations and analysis that lead to the development of a design idea that can act as a hinge with the existing situation, proposing new services and functions.

ABSTRACT “Per giudicare Architettura,aggiungi agli elementi di giudizio il tempo. Storicamente il Tempo è un collaboratore-collaudatore dell’ architettura (come di tutte le arti), esso ha –dice France- i sui strumenti, il sole, la pioggia, il vento del Nord: sempre aggiunge qualcosa di suo, di perennemente vivo, che dobbiamo, noi artisti, prevedere o immaginare, affidandogli le nostre opere.” Il tempo investe gli edifici in differenti modi e maniere, modificande aspetto, uso, funzioni: questa è una costante perenne, da sempre presente dai piccolo borgo sino alla città. Oggigiorno vari e molteplici sono le situazioni in cui ci si trova ad affrontare sfide di riqualificazione e reinterpretazione di spazi un tempo occupati da industrie, scali ferroviari, strutture militari, e via dicendo Edifici nati e progettati per assolvere a delle funzioni che causa il mutamento del contesto non sono più necessarie nè richieste, venendo così a creare prima di tutto vuoti urbani funzionali. Questa è la situazione che si propone anche a Mombello, comune di Limbiate in Brianza. In questa località si trova un ex complesso manicomiale, attualmente in stato di abbandono e degrado in quasi tutta la sua interezza. Da qui partono una serie di considerazioni e analisi che conducono allo sviluppo di un’idea progettuale che possa fare da cerniera con la situazione esistente riproponendo nuovi servizi e funzioni.
