Foundation los clubes. A proposal for the extension of the Cuadra San Cristobal

Focusing on Cuadra San Cristobal is an opportunity that developed during my experience at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). A client’s interest in the creation of a new multifunctional centre alongside Barragan’s works was the triggering element for the whole design research; questioning its requirements led to the definition of this proposal - the Foundation Los Clubes. Understanding the styles and the traditions, and considering the ambitions of Barragan, helped in the definition of the design: the height of the landmark recalling the height of the Satellite Towers; the choice of the paving materials, used in several projects of the architect, and coming from a long mexican tradition; the design of the hortus conclusus, coming from the deep passion and interest of Barragan towards the landscape - i.e. designing the architecture for the landscape and not adding the landscape as a mere tool -. Foundation Los Clubes - not only gives a chance to re-establish the figure of Luis Barragan - both by giving public access to his archives and by relocating them in his country of origin -, but also defines an opportunity to create a new highlight on the region, a reference and new destination within the city.

Concentrarsi su Cuadra San Cristobal è un'opportunità sviluppatasi durante la mia esperienza di tirocinio presso l'Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). L'interesse di un cliente per la creazione di un nuovo centro multifunzionale accanto alle opere di Barragan è stato il "triggering element" dell'intera ricerca architettonica; ed il mettere in discussione le richieste del brief ha portato alla definizione di questa proposta: la Fondazione Los Clubes. Comprendere gli stili e le tradizioni, e considerare le ambizioni progettuali di Barragan, ha aiutato nella definizione del design: l'altezza del landmark che riprende l'altezza delle torri satellite; la scelta dei materiali di pavimentazione, utilizzati in diversi progetti dell'architetto e provenienti da una lunga tradizione messicana; il design dell'hortus conclusus, che proviene dalla profonda passione e interesse di Barragan verso il paesaggio- i.e. progettare l'architettura per il paesaggio e non aggiungere il paesaggio come un mero strumento -. Foundation Los Clubes non solo dà la possibilità di ristabilire la figura di Luis Barragan - sia dando pubblico accesso ai suoi archivi e trasferendoli nel suo paese d’origine -, ma definisce anche un’opportunità per creare un nuovo highlight sulla regione, una riferimento e una nuova destinazione all’interno della città.
