Remixing architecture through urban culture : the Bronx revolution

The thesis consists of a journey in the Hip Hop culture examining its primordial spaces and their relationship with the urban environment, identifying specific recurring characteristics that can be translated into quantifiable performances. Therefore, analyzing the South Bronx through the fundamentals of Hip Hop, Rap, Djing, Writing and Breakdancing, set up a reinterpretation of shapes, surfaces and sounds. The performative responses of these areas regulate the project strategy, which plans four different design solutions that work as catalysts to enhance the existing relationships of the urban context. “Remixing Architecture through Urban Culture” presents a main design intervention that embraces and represents past, present and future of the hip-hop experience and three spatial devices that, through a reciprocal dialog, can materialize an infrastructure that is highly connected to the urban environment of the Bronx. Perfectly aligned with the context, the volume interprets the theme of social ascent, a recurring element in the Hip Hop scene. This is translated from the urban scale to the individual building through a sloping roof that rise from Manhattan to the Bronx. Maintaining the visual alignments and reproducing the relationship between the context figure-ground, the project proposes a formal solution that defines a volumetric and symbolic dialogue within the urban framework. With the aim of strengthening the dialogue established with the context, the volume is suspended at the level of the surrounding infrastructures, allowing the complete use of the area and the extension of the existing riverfront park facing the Harlem River. To emphasize the urban formal composition, the volume is sculpted, proposing a spatial articulation that recalls the complexity of the context and its relationship between open spaces and built environments.

La tesi intraprende un viaggio nella cultura Hip Hop analizzandone i suoi spazi primordiali e il loro rapporto con l’ambiente urbano, individuando specifiche caratteristiche ricorrenti traducibili in prestazioni quantificabili. Esaminando così il South Bronx attraverso i fondamentali dell’Hip Hop, Rap, Djing, Writing e Breakdancing sono state interpretate forme, superfici e suoni. La risposta prestazionale di queste aree regola la strategia d’azione che propone quindi quattro soluzioni progettuali differenti che lavorano come catalizzatrici delle relazioni esistenti di un tessuto urbano da potenziare. Remixing Architecture through Urban Culture, propone un intervento progettuale primario che racchiude e rappresenta passato, presente e futuro dell’esperienza hip hop e tre dispositivi spaziali complementari ad esso che materializzano una infrastruttura altamente connessa all’ambiente urbano del Bronx. Perfettamente allineato con il contesto, il volume interpreta il tema della ascesa sociale, elemento ricorrente nella scena Hip Hop. Questo viene tradotto alla scala urbana e del singolo edificio attraverso una copertura inclinata che da Manhattan sale verso il Bronx. Mantenendo gli allineamenti visivi e riproducendo il rapporto tra pieni e vuoti il progetto propone una soluzione formale che definisce un dialogo volumetrico e simbolico con il contesto. Con l’obiettivo di potenziare il dialogo stabilito con l’intorno il volume viene sospeso alla quota delle infrastrutture che circondano l’area di progetto permettendo la completa fruizione dell’area e l’estensione del parco esistente sull’Harlem River. Ponendo l’accento sulla composizione formale urbana il volume viene scolpito proponendo un’articolazione spaziale che riprende la complessità del contesto e la sua relazione tra spazi aperti e edificato.
