Ren : un progetto per la Chinatown di Prato

Rèn, a project for the Prato Chinatown Prato appears as an unaccustomed city, an exception between Italian and European cities. A productive city of a complex system of relations that orbit around the Florence-Prato-Pistoia plain and which define a territory of social and economic continuity that has always been able to reinvent itself. These features are rooted in a more recent history; the one of post-war urban growth and the ways in which it has been guided by projects and urban plans of total excellence that have since succeeded one another. Just think of the PRG of 1956 by Leonardo Savioli and the PRG of 1998 by Bernardo Secchi, but above all a large number of radical projects by Archizoom Associati and Andrea Branzi, which in that industrial district that Secchi will call "Macrolotto 0", defined the No-Stop City in 1968, a homogeneous housing system, an absolute internal whole. The history of Prato’s industrial district and that of its urban development are reflected in each other with a third, that of the most important Chinatown in Europe. Prato's Chinatown originated in the early eighties and developed thanks to the crisis in the Prato textile industry; with its exponential growth and its market power today represents the second nature of the city. It is no coincidence that the Chinatown rises to the "Macrolotto 0", which is the strategic point of production and aggregation of the city, which today has about 22,000 Chinese inhabitants and 3,000 active companies in the Pronto Moda, and which represents a real gated community at the doors of the historic center. In this opaque fabric, the Chinatown takes on a dense form, perfectly embodying the principles and rules of the No-Stop City, updating itself with the needs of globalization and measuring itself with one of the great themes of contemporaneity, integration. Current policies have disregarded the promises of equality, the current world is characterized by ungovernable complexity, by the irrationality of the market and by an inextricable social conflict. Though, "the Relation is linked in the encounter with the other, with the stranger, recognized as such. But recognizing is not synonymous with understanding. "Understanding" implies the idea of taking with oneself, of stretching arms out to grasp and drag to oneself, therefore of reducing to transparency and recasting in the One. The relationship establishes consent to opacity, or knows how to recognize that the world exists in the flavors of multiple complexity. "Let us therefore call opacity what protects the Diverse". Opacity is a necessary condition of the Report. "The general consensus of particular opacities is the simplest equivalent of non-barbarism." In the case of Prato, the relationship between Chinese and Italians takes the form of a peaceful conflict that is limited to a mutual ignorance or a denial of diversity always with some embarrassment. Rèn is a project that claims the right to the opacity of a culture, it is a project for the Chinatown of Prato, which in the "Macrolotto 0" takes the form of a monument in which the Chinese community can recognize each community as every people has need stones and monuments to identify with. The monument is a smart infrastructure that feeds on the concordia oppositorum of the two cultures, drawing on the Chinese imagination and the forms of the past of the city of Prato, starting from the arches of the cloister of the Duomo to remember a very recurring decorative style in culture Chinese folk, that of the dragon. It is an entire partial productive interior, which is compared to the walls and the Emperor's Castle, and which serves the commercial axis of Chinatown with the production of energy, resources and minimal services, the only true form of contemporary production.

Rèn, un progetto per la Chinatown di Prato Prato appare ai nostri occhi come una città non consueta, un’eccezione tra le città italiane ed europee. Città produttiva di un complesso sistema di relazioni che orbitano intorno alla piana Firenze-Prato-Pistoia e che definiscono un territorio di continuità sociale ed economica che ha sempre saputo reinventarsi. Questi caratteri si radicano in una storia più recente; quella della crescita urbana del dopoguerra e dei modi nei quali essa è stata guidata da progetti e piani urbanistici di totale eccellenza che da allora si sono succeduti. Basti pensare al PRG del 1956 di Leonardo Savioli ed al PRG del 1998 di Bernardo Secchi, ma soprattutto ad un gran numero di progetti radical di Archizoom Associati e Andrea Branzi, che proprio in quel distretto industriale che Secchi chiamerà “Macrolotto 0”, nel 1968 definisce la No-Stop City, un sistema abitativo omogeneo, un tutto interno assoluto. La storia del distretto industriale pratese e quella dello sviluppo urbano di Prato si rispecchiano l’una nell’altra con una terza, quella della più importante Chinatown d’Europa. La Chinatown di Prato ha origine nei primi anni Ottanta e si sviluppa grazie alla crisi del tessile pratese; con la sua crescita esponenziale ed il suo potere di mercato oggi rappresenta la seconda natura della città. Non è un caso che la Chinatown sorga al “Macrolotto 0”, che è il punto strategico di produzione ed aggregazione della città, che oggi conta circa 22.000 cinesi e 3.000 imprese attive nel Pronto Moda, e che rappresenta una vera e propria gated comunity alle porte del centro storico. In questo tessuto opaco la Chinatown assume una forma densa, incarnando perfettamente i principi e le regole della No-Stop City, aggiornandosi con le necessità dalla globalizzazione e misurandosi con uno dei grandi temi della contemporaneità, l’integrazione. Le politiche attuali hanno disatteso le promesse di uguaglianza, il mondo attuale è caratterizzato da una ingovernabile complessità, dall’irrazionalità del mercato e da un inestricabile conflitto sociale. Eppure, "la Relazione si allaccia nell’incontro con l’altro, con l’estraneo, riconosciuto come tale. Ma riconoscere non è sinonimo di comprendere. «Comprendere» implica l’idea di prendere con sé, di stendere le braccia per cogliere e trascinare a sé, dunque di ridurre alla trasparenza e rifondere nell’Uno. La messa in relazione acconsente all’opacità, ovvero sa riconoscere che il mondo esiste nei sapori della complessità multipla. «Chiamiamo dunque opacità ciò che protegge il Diverso». L’opacità è condizione necessaria della Relazione. «Il consenso generale alle opacità particolari è il più semplice equivalente della non-barbarie»." Nel caso di Prato il rapporto tra cinesi e italiani assume la forma di un conflitto-pacifico che si limita ad un reciproco ignorarsi o ad un rinnegare la diversità sempre con qualche imbarazzo. Rèn è un progetto che rivendica il diritto all’opacità di una cultura, è un progetto per la Chinatown di Prato, che nel “Macrolotto 0” assume la forma di un monumento nel quale la comunità cinese possa riconoscersi, ogni comunità come ogni popolo ha bisogno di pietre e monumenti in cui identificarsi. Il monumento è un’infrastruttura smart che si nutre della concordia oppositorum delle due culture, attingendo dall’immaginario cinese e dalle forme del passato della città di Prato, a partire dagli archi del chiostro del Duomo fino a ricordare uno stilema decorativo molto ricorrente nella cultura popolare cinese, quello del drago. È un tutto interno parziale produttivo, che si confronta per dimensioni con le mura ed il Castello dell’Imperatore, e che va a servire l’asse commerciale della Chinatown con la produzione di energia, risorse e servizi minimi, unica vera forma di produzione contemporanea.
