This thesis deals with the planning of a complex building which has to be built in Sesto San Giovanni in Milan. This is an urban environment which can be found in the area next to the 1° Maggio railway station in Gramsci park. This is a narrow park which is about 800 meters long and sits between two completely different backgrounds. The first, Gramsci road, is not only one of the main city junctions with incredibly heavy traffic , but it is also the main connection point to the railway station. Whereas the ex Falck area is to be found on the opposite side of the park, across the railway tracks, in an area which will be dedicated in the future to Health and Research . What we tried to work on was to re- plan the whole of Gramsci park, along with its neighbouring gardens of Via Ariosto. The attempt was to work along the length of the area, crossing it lengthwise from one end to the other bearing in mind all its strategic points and studying the various road entrances. This is a proposal to try and upgrade that part of Sesto san Giovanni which is beginning to lose its connection with the surrounding area. The system is based on a transformation that foresees, not only , spaces dedicated to leisure centres and sports facilities but also a system offered to the city which acts as an focal point. In fact, the complexity of the project lies in the delicate collaboration between functions and spaces in a harmonic and balanced way. After having studied the urban area with its bindings and limits, together with the editing of a functional program which took all the requests and regulations into account, a first layout was drawn up as a starting point. Two buildings stand in the center of this area. They have different functions, and also different shapes. Concrete and wood, the structural casing and the transparent shell, a majestic and impressive building situated near a more basic one, but none the less elaborate. The bigger building is used as an ice rink and, if need be, also as a multifunctional place for important events. The smaller one is used as a swimming pool centre, including its adjacent rooms and areas . The empty space between them forms their relationship : two solids on the surface. All that contrast perceived on ground level is rooted in that same base which acts as a link between the two buildings. This is not only a physical link but also a functional one, in fact in the basement there is a gym along with its training rooms and a spa. The landscape of the park changes in its quest for an understanding with the existing green areas. The road circulation changes, too. The green-zone will not be restricted to specific spaces, but it will gradually creep and spread among the buildings, upgrading them. It will invade the paths and remodel the notion of the streets. We could, for example, slow down the traffic flow, by changing the direction of travel along Via Gramsci, at the same time making the pedestrian crossings safer. By doing so, the two parks become connected to each other. Even if the aim of this composition/plan has been made in a search for clearness, measure, and rhythm, it is at the same time able to offer various experiences, thanks to the mixture of different plots and hierarchies. The variety that we propose, allows us to have an overall view, following a connection between different types of relationships, there are no random elements or ones that are disconnected from the others. What appears is always a single plan that allows a pedestrian to find his bearings clearly, but at the same time, this unmistakable system allows him to wander, arousing curiosity and a desire to experience different spaces.
