The whole picture. A storytelling-oriented process mapping system within the Cultural Heritage sector

In the cultural heritage field, storytelling plays a fundamental role in reaching audiences, especially when the subject of the narration is the technical process of an operation on cultural goods — or what might be called “backstage activities”. Documentary storytelling of this kind starts from gathering knowledge on processes and mapping data, linking material, actors and themes. Through the involvement within the MOBARTECH project — whose goal is to create a hub for the diffusion of knowledge on cultural heritage operations practices — I designed The Whole Picture, a platform that aims to link cultural heritage professionals to the team in charge of the communication within a specific project. The platform implicates a co-design method that undergoes the different phases of the project. The Whole Picture allows researchers and professionals, operating on a cultural good, to archive their learnings in a storytelling-oriented way, while storytellers could receive a constant scientific support to inform the accuracy of their outcomes. The platform generates thematic paths of content that could be sorted and filtered according to a set of specific tags created through the collaboration with the CH team.

Nel campo dei beni culturali lo storytelling assume un ruolo fondamentale nel raggiungimento del pubblico, specialmente quando il soggetto è il processo operativo su un bene — ossia le “attività di backstage”. Lo storytelling documentario di questo tipo inizia con la raccolta di informazione sui processi e la mappatura di dati, collegando materiali raccolti, attori e temi affrontati. Attraverso il mio coinvolgimento nel progetto MOBARTECH — il cui obiettivo è quello di creare un centro per la diffusione della conoscenza sui processi di intervento sui beni culturali — ho progettato The Whole Picture, una piattaforma che ha l’obiettivo di mettere in contatto professionisti dei beni culturali con il team che si occupa della comunicazione all’interno di un dato progetto. La piattaforma implica l’utilizzo di un metodo di co-design che tiene in considerazione le differenti fasi del progetto. The Whole Picture permette a ricercatori e professionisti che intervengono su un bene, di archiviare i propri avanzamenti in modo “storytelling-oriented”, mentre consente agli storyteller di riceve supporto scientifico costante per migliorare l’accuratezza dei propri risultati. La piattaforma genera percorsi tematici di contenuti che possono essere filtrati tramite tag creati in collaborazione con il team esperto sui beni culturali.
