NOLUB: a space for social empowerment

The thesis project is located in an urban context characterized by interesting dynamics of social innovation, which have triggered a process of widespread renewal within it. The district in question is located in the north of Piazzale Loreto and and it has recently been called NoLo. This area, not far from the urban center, has been affected by several migratory flows that, over time, have generated effects of hardship and difficulties of social cohesion; the language barrier is still a factor that hinders the inclusion of foreign citizens in social life activities and limits their access to the services offered by the city. In recent years, this neighborhood has seen the birth of one of the most important and largest Social Street in the city of Milan, called ‘NoLo Social district’, which organizes various activities among the inhabitants of the neighborhood. The aim of the project is therefore to generate a protected but integrated place in the urban fabric, which could constitute a physical reference point for the citizens of NoLo, a hub of integrated services (a place of linguistic education , portineria 2.0, co-working area, Social Street center) linked to the real needs of the inhabitants. Through the removal of language barriers, addressed to different age groups, and through advanced approaches and teaching methods, this urban hub, called NOLUB, could allow the neighborhood to be included in the broader development process of the city itself. In the long run, this space could become an instrument in the hands of the NoLo citizens through which they could be able to define and reinforce the ever-changing needs of this urban area.

Il progetto di tesi si colloca in un contesto urbano caratterizzato da interessanti dinamiche di innovazione sociale, che hanno innescato un processo di rinnovamento diffuso al suo interno. Il quartiere in questione è locato a Nord di Piazzale Loreto ed è stato recentemente denominato NoLo. Questa area, poco distante dal centro urbano, è stata interessata da diversi flussi migratori che, nel tempo, hanno generato effetti di disagio e difficoltà di coesione sociale; la barriera linguistica costituisce ancora un fattore che frena l’inclusione dei cittadini stranieri nelle attività di vita sociale e limita il loro accesso ai servizi offerti dalla città. Negli ultimi anni il quartiere ha visto la nascita di una delle più importanti e più grandi Social Street della città di Milano, denominata ‘NoLo Social district’, che organizza svariate attività tra gli abitanti del quartiere. L’obiettivo del progetto è dunque quello di generare un luogo protetto ma integrato nel tessuto urbano, che possa costituire un punto di riferimento fisico per i cittadini di NoLo, un hub di servizi integrati (luogo di formazione linguistica, portineria 2.0, area co-working, sede della Social Street) strettamente legati alle esigenze reali degli abitati. Attraverso l’abbattimento delle barriere linguistiche, affrontato a diverse fasce di età, e mediante approcci e metodologie didattiche avanzate, questo urban hub, denominato NOLUB, potrebbe consentire al quartiere di essere inserito nel processo più ampio di sviluppo della città stessa. A lungo andare, questo spazio potrebbe diventare uno strumento nelle mani dei cittadini di NoLo attraverso cui essi possano essere in grado di definire e rafforzare le sempre nuove esigenze di questa area urbana.
