Utero-Pelvic Junction Obstruction is a narrowing of the vessel between the kidneys and the ureter, which can lead to permanent lesions or death of the fetus. The goal of this project is to develop a new device helping against the pathological condition. The new concept is proposing a micro-stent made of smart materials and triggered via inductive heat to change its shape and hold the Utero-Pelvic Junction free from obstruction. This project is implementing the design-engineering tools to create an innovative device, made with shape memory polymers, fabricated in micro-scale 3D printing process, and designed in a novel shape. Solutions were given to all main engineering challenges: production of stent in micro-scale (50-300um diameter), pre-folding of the structure, and self-opening ability of the device. Prototypes have proven the feasibility of the concept, creating the first steps in the development of a novel medical device.
L'ostruzione della giunzione Utero-Pelvica è un restringimento del vaso tra i reni e l'uretere, che può portare a lesioni permanenti o alla morte del feto. L'obiettivo di questo progetto è sviluppare un nuovo dispositivo contro la patologia. Il nuovo concetto propone un micro stent fatto di materiali intelligenti e attivato tramite il calore induttivo per cambiarne la forma e mantenere la giunzione Utero-pelvica priva di ostruzioni. Questo progetto implementa gli strumenti del design-engineering per creare un dispositivo innovativo, realizzato con polimeri a memoria di forma, fabbricato in un processo di stampa 3D in micro scala e progettato in una nuova forma. Sono state fornite soluzioni a tutte le principali sfide ingegneristiche: produzione di stent in micro-scala (diametro 50-300um), pre-piegatura della struttura e capacità di auto-apertura del dispositivo. I prototipi hanno dimostrato la fattibilità del concetto, creando i primi passi nello sviluppo di un nuovo dispositivo medico.
