During 20th century, the proportion of older people in the Brazilian population used to be equivalent to that of less developed countries, which is less than 10%. But in the last decade, this profile began to change quickly. Between 2005 and 2015, the proportion of people over 60 years of age grew faster than the world average, approaching the projected rate in developed countries, according to data reported by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) in SIS ( Synthesis of Social Indicators). In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined the term “Active Aging” as the “process of optimizing opportunities for health, social participation and safety in order to guarantee quality of life for the elderly”. Since then, various policies and strategies have been developed regarding varying situations according to each country. In this thesis, the process of global ageing, related policies, urban strategies and architectural solutions will be investigated in the world and in Brazil. Specific cases of architectural models in metropolises will be evaluated intensely and based on the analysis of this information, an architectural and urbanistic model of housing for the elderly in the city of São Paulo will be defined., thus offering social equipment suitable for active ageing in this metropolis.
