Isolabella. Museo sociale

ISOLABELLA Museo Sociale is a thesis project concerning an existing but disused building since 2001 located in Milan, in the Porta Nuova area, in Via Melchiorre Gioia 6 / A. "Isolabella" is the title of the thesis and coincides with the proper name of the building. We decided to recall the old epithet because the project is inspired by it and it is, at the same time, the goal: the former Hotel Isolabella, so called because "Isolabella" was the name of the district in the years of the industrial revolution and the a consequent worker question, it takes up the same life that it once had through a new content and new internal forms. A new project, then. The subtitle "Social Museum" has a double meaning: the content is "social" (the permanent exhibition, the heart of the project, hosts the historical and thematic reconstruction of "La Milano Sociale", fruit of a historical-scientific research conducted by us: therefore, the curating of the exhibition is an integral part of the thesis project) and in the form, because the museum is the pivot around which new "social" spaces develop, understood as places of meeting, communion and sharing. The bar, the bookshop, the laboratories, the multi-purpose rooms, and the new open space, which previously was an unreachable courtyard, is now a "square" inside the urban fabric, which connects the building to the city and the city ​​to the building. In short, the thesis consists of a project of re-use of the building in question through the design of the interiors, among which the external space of competence is considered, albeit in the open. The interior design unfolds in the existing context of the building, respecting its shape and structure that have been stratified over time, and exalting them rather than oppressing them or erasing them. The project theme assigned within the laboratory is the construction of a museum, with its annexed functions including a permanent exhibition. As part of our thesis project, the theme has become the means by which to pursue the goal: to restore life to Isolabella, a building existing in today's Milan, only as a physical encumbrance and, as such, a lost opportunity.

ISOLABELLA Museo Sociale è un progetto di tesi che riguarda un edificio esistente ma in disuso dal 2001 sito a Milano, nella zona Porta Nuova, in Via Melchiorre Gioia 6/A. “Isolabella” è il titolo della tesi e coincide con il nome proprio dell’edificio. Abbiamo deciso di rievocare il vecchio epiteto perché da esso il progetto è ispirato ed esso è, al tempo stesso, l’obiettivo: l’ex Albergo Isolabella, così denominato perché “Isolabella” era il nome del quartiere negli anni della rivoluzione industriale e della conseguente questione operaia, riprende la stessa vita che aveva un tempo attraverso un nuovo contenuto e nuove forme interne. Un nuovo progetto, quindi. Il sottotitolo “Museo Sociale” ha un doppio significato: è “sociale” il contenuto (la mostra permanente, cuore del progetto, ospita la ricostruzione storica e tematica de “La Milano Sociale” frutto di una ricerca storico-scientifica da noi condotta: è quindi parte integrante del progetto di tesi anche la curatela della mostra) e nella forma, perché il museo è il perno attorno al quale si sviluppano nuovi spazi “sociali”, così intesi in quanto luoghi di ritrovo, comunione e condivisione. Lo sono il bar, il bookshop, i laboratori, le sale polifunzionali, e il nuovo spazio aperto, che se prima era un cortile irraggiungibile ora è invece una “piazza” interna al tessuto urbano, che insieme raccorda l’edificio alla città e la città all’edificio. In sintesi, la tesi consiste in un progetto di riuso dello stabile in oggetto tramite la progettazione degli interni, tra i quali viene considerato lo spazio esterno di competenza, seppur a cielo aperto. Il progetto di interni si snoda nel contesto esistente dell’edificio, rispettandone la forma e la struttura che si sono stratificate nel tempo, ed esaltandole piuttosto che opprimendole o cancellandole. Il tema di progetto assegnato nell’ambito del laboratorio è la realizzazione di un museo, con le sue funzioni annesse tra le quali un allestimento permanente. Nell’ambito del nostro progetto di tesi il tema è diventato il mezzo attraverso il quale perseguire il fine: restituire vita all’Isolabella, un edificio esistente nella Milano di oggi, solo come ingombro fisico e, in quanto tale, un’occasione persa.
