Sostruzioni per la didattica. L'ampliamento della Scuola di Architettura di Siracusa

The Syracuse School of Architecture is located in Ortigia, inside the Abela Barracks, in front of the fortified Castle Maniace complex. Here on the limit between these monuments is the project for the expansion of the school that establishes new relationships with the ground, the city, the monuments and the idea of ​​the same School of Architecture. The project comes from the knowledge and interpretation of the signs in the place where it is inserted and investigates its nature and translates its character, together with the study of the proposed theme, also investigated in the complexity of the translations and the meanings of the theme in the history of architecture and the city. This study allows us to imagine a series of spaces and relationships in a place that is now deprived of its original features, allowing us to define an order and a clearer hierarchy of elements, through the composition of the parts on the urban scale, highlighting for each element of the city its most original character, sought through the excavation, to define the dimensions of the land hidden over the centuries by continuous landfills, through the beamed building that marks the limit of the city and marks the threshold between city and castle, as well as allowing to imagine and interpret in contemporary times the theme of the substructure on which Syracuse was built for specific reasons, linked to the conformation of the territory and to defensive issues.

La Scuola di Architettura di Siracusa si trova a Ortigia, all’interno della Caserma Abela, di fronte al complesso fortificato del Castello Maniace. Qui sul limite tra questi monumenti si inserisce il progetto di ampliamento della scuola che stabilisce nuove relazioni con il suolo, la città, i monumenti e l’idea della stessa Scuola di Architettura. Il progetto nasce dalla conoscenza e dall’interpretazione dei segni presenti nel luogo in cui si inserisce e di cui ne indaga la natura e ne traduce il carattere, insieme allo studio del tema proposto, indagato anch’esso nella complessità delle traduzioni e dei significati del tema nella storia dell’architettura e della città. Questo studio permette di immaginare una serie di spazi e relazioni in un luogo ad oggi privato dei suoi caratteri originali, consentendo di definire un ordine ed una più chiara gerarchia degli elementi, attraverso la composizione delle parti alla scala urbana, evidenziando per ciascun elemento della città il proprio carattere più originale, ricercato attraverso lo scavo, per definire le quote del terreno nascosto nei secoli da continui rinterri, attraverso l’edificio a trave che segna il limite della città e marca la soglia di passaggio tra città e castello, oltre a permettere di immaginare e interpretare nella contemporaneità il tema della sostruzione su cui Siracusa si è costruita per ragioni precise, legate alla conformazione del territorio e a questioni difensive.
