Verona : landscape and architectural interventions in the Lazzaretto area

Lazzaretto di Verona was the third in chronological order established in Italy during black death period in 1549. It was realized by Michele Sanmicheli and Gian Giacomo Sanguinetto. The area used as hospital until 18th when the Austrian occupied it as deposit of gunpowder and ammunition. During 1939 to 1945, the German came and used it as storage for bombs which exploded in 1945, it caused large damage of Lazzaretto and deaths of more than thirty people. Nowadays, the Lazzaretto was not well known for the public and interventions for it is extremely urgent because the ruins and memories of Lazzaretto are slowly disappearing. The project is aimed at activating the Lazzaretto area by landscape and architectural interventions. First of all, introducing two kinds of transportation : bicycle and rafting to solve the problem of terrible accessibility to Lazzaretto and connect city center with Lazzaretto area along with several historical highlights of Verona such as la Diga di Santa Caterina (1850-1855), la Chiesatta romance di San Pancrazio (1100cira) and la Villa Bemini Buri (XVII sec). Second, insert three active points along the landscape belt : rafting center, open museum of Lazzaretto, bridge connected with Villa buri. The project designed to the recovery and enhancement of the monument in the Lazzaretto area and recall the memory beloved by the Veronese, also to create an attractive area for the city.
