Rehabilitation project of the Paraskevaidio transplant foundation into a bi-communal cultural centre

The political situation in Cyprus during the last 44 years has created many social problems, among them and maybe the most important is the gap between the young generations of the two communities that were forced to live separately: the Greek- Cypriots and the Turkish-Cypriots. The Turkish invasion of 1974 divided the island but also its people, with the Greek-Cypriots living in the Southern part and the Turkish- Cypriots on the Northern part. The well-desired solution is coming soon, according to the politicians of the world. A project that will prepare these two communities to live together with peace and compassion is of high priority in order to prevent undesirable future situations. This project’s goal is to transform the Paraskevaidio Transplant Centre (Nicosia, Cyprus), into a Bi-communal Educational & Cultural Centre which will serve the goal mentioned above, bringing the young people of the two communities closer. The new design combines modern features and designs with renovations and extensions, bringing a modern property of the 50’s into the 21st Century.

La situazione politica a Cipro ha creato, durante gli ultimi 44 anni, molti problemi sociali; tra questi, quello che può forse essere considerato più grave è il divario tra le giovani generazioni provenienti da due comunità che dovettero forzosamente vivere separate: i greco-ciprioti e i turco-ciprioti. L’invasione turca del 1974 divise non solo l’isola, ma anche la sua popolazione: la comunità greco-cipriota fu costretta a vivere nei territori a sud, quella turco-cipriota nella zona settentrionale. Una fortemente auspicata soluzione arriverà presto, in accordo con il mondo politico internazionale. Infatti, un progetto che prepari queste due comunità a vivere insieme, in un clima pacifico di comprensione reciproca, è una priorità non ulteriormente derogabile, al fine di prevenire l’insorgenza in futuro di ancor più gravi criticità. L’obiettivo di questo progetto è di trasformare il “Paraskevaidio Transplant Centre” (Nicosia, Cipro) nel “Bi-communal Educational & Cultural Centre”, un luogo a servizio delle prioritarie esigenze di condivisione sopra espresse, uno spazio che permetta l‘avvicinamento socio-culturale dei giovani provenienti dalle due comunità isolane. Il nuovo design combina caratteristiche e linee innovative con rinnovamenti ed ampliamenti strutturali, e così facendo trasporta un moderno edificio degli anni Cinquanta del Novecento all’interno del XXI secolo.
