Abstract
Urban margins have long formed sites of economic, social and industrial changes. This thesis re-imagines these fringe landscapes, attending in particular to the gaps, interstices, wastelands and incidental spaces of the city that elude easy categorization. This spaces wants to be analyzed and planned as possibilities for a new development of the city’s project, trying to understand how it could be possible to generate transformations at a wider scale, starting from the design of punctual elements that usually refers to the domestic scale. We recognized particular dynamics of micro-urban development to be taking place in London, it was therefore decided to investigate these dynamics spatially through the analytic redrawing of ground floors. The aim was to arise the potentiality of the streetscape as the project area which can support connections between latent relationship fluxes of the city, border intended not as a limit but as a communication space between the domestic sphere and the social interaction one and moreover the importance of the informal re-appropriation of the urban space. The lesson to be learnt from London is the way in which those dynamics has led to an urban regeneration where principles, identified as micro-urban, are effectively applied to create a design approach, posed as alternative to the urban planning made of hatches. Once identified these principles the next step was to try and apply them by building a project exercise. It originates, in forced contradiction with the case study, from the dynamics of a medium-small Italian city, in order to expose an elasticity specific to the modus operandi. The contradictory choice wants to underline the universal presence of a micro urban scale which spontaneously acts parasitically, contaminating the top-down urban plans and it bears the possibility to become the area where the architect designs an hidden urbanism.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
